LAKE PLACID, N.Y. — The NCAA East Regional Skiing Championship got under way at the St. Lawrence Carnival today, and Dartmouth — led by sophomore
Patrick Caldwell — finished the first day tied with New Hampshire for second place with 403 points. Vermont owned a hefty advantage at the top of the team standings after the completion of the four events with 487.
Caldwell, a native of Lyme, New Hampshire, entered the carnival having finished first or second in each of the five collegiate races he had participated in this year, and he continued that streak by winning the 10K Free by nearly 37 seconds with a time of 27:16.7. The top-ranked male Nordic skier in the East had company on the podium as
Jan Ketterson (Bloomington, Minnesota) had his best finish of the year in third in 28:19.0. Senior
Silas Talbot (Anchorage, Alaska) gave the Big Green three skiers in the top five by claiming fifth with his time of 28:44.5, while sophomore
Fabian Stocek (Jilemnice, Czech Republic) was right behind in sixth at 28:53.7. The other four skiers in the top eight were all from Vermont, however, meaning Dartmouth won the event by only eight points despite the cluster at the top.
Following the men's 10K Free, the women took to the course at Mt. Van Hoevenberg for the 5K Free. The top skier for the Big Green was junior
Corey Stock (Lincoln, Massachusetts) in seventh place, skating across the finish line in 16:28.9. Others to score for Dartmouth were freshman
Cara Piske (Steamboat Springs, Colorado) in 18th in 17:01.0 and senior
Carly Wynn (Queensbury, New York) in 24th in 17:11.7. The trio combined for 81 points, putting them in fifth just behind Bates, which had 82. Although the top two spots were earned by Middlebury's Heather Mooney (15:51.2) and UNH's Annika Taylor (16:07.3), Vermont managed to amass the most points with 124 points as third through sixth place were taken by Catamounts.
Over at Whiteface Mountain, the Dartmouth women's alpine team was in prime position to win the giant slalom after the first run with three of the fastest five times belonged to Big Green skiers. The second run did not go as well, unfortunately, particularly for the bib leader, freshman
Foreste Peterson (Berkeley, California) who did not finish. Dartmouth settled for third with 107 points as freshman
Libby Gibson (Jamaica, Vermont), placed fifth with a combined time of 2:12.39, another rookie in
Kelly Moore (Ottawa, Ontario) finished seventh in 2:12.88 and junior
Lizzie Kistler (Santa Rosa, California) was next in eighth with a time of 2:13.10. Finishing one-two in the standings were Catamount skiers Kristina Riis-Johannessen (2:10.76) and Elli Terwiel (2:12.05) as they helped Vermont total 134 points while New Hampshire edged the Big Green for second, 111-107.
Like the women's Nordic squad, the top skier for the men's alpine team placed seventh as freshman Kevyn Read (Calgary, Alberta) put together two runs that added up to 2:10.02. With sophomore
Dylan Brooks (Mammoth Lakes, California) claiming 14th in 2:10.44 and sophomore
Prescott McLaughlin (Millbrook, New York) taking 21st in 2:11.27, Dartmouth totaled 82 points for fourth in the giant slalom. New Hampshire squeaked past Middlebury to win the event, 112-109, while UVM was right behind with 104.
The carnival will conclude on Saturday with the men starting things off with a 20K Classic race at Mt. Van Hoevenberg and the slalom at Whiteface Mountain. Both events will begin at 9:30 a.m.
