LAKE PLACID, N.Y. — Dartmouth finished up at the NCAA East Regional Skiing Championship at the St. Lawrence Carnival today, and narrowly fought off New Hampshire for second place while Vermont won the event going away with 1,001 points. The Big Green amassed 782 points to UNH's 770, while Middlebury finished comfortably in fourth with 686.
For the second straight day, the men's Nordic race was dominated by Dartmouth and Vermont with the top eight spots of the 20K Classic being split between the two schools. And once again, it was sophomore
Patrick Caldwell (Lyme, N.H.) who cruised to victory as his time of 57:27.2 was nearly two-and-a-half minutes ahead of Catamount Jorgen Grav in second. After the first two trips around the 5K course at Mt. Van Hoevenberg, a cluster of eight skiers were separated by less than 10 seconds at the front of the pack. But Caldwell made his move during the third lap, putting nearly a minute between him and the rest of the field, then didn't let up in posting his fifth victory of the carnival season.
Sophomore
Fabian Stocek (Jilemnice, Czech Republic) joined Caldwell on the podium by finishing third in 59:52.0, a mere eight-tenths of a second behind Grav. With senior
Silas Talbot (Anchorage, Alaska) placing sixth in 1:00:21.2, the Big Green were able to edge Vermont in the team standings, 131-127. For good measure, sophomore
Jan Ketterson (Bloomington, Minnesota) was the next to skate across the finish line in seventh in 1:00:43.1.
In the women's 15K Classic, Dartmouth junior
Corey Stock (Lincoln, Massachusetts) was just nipped for the final spot on the podium as she placed fourth in 53:47.8, only half a second behind Middlebury's Kelsey Phinney. Classmate
Molly Siegel (Bethel, Maine) put points on the board for the Big Green in 20th with her time of 56:56.0, as did freshman
Cara Piske (Steamboat Springs, Colorado) in 23rd in 57:17.3. Annika Taylor of New Hampshire took the individual title with a time of 53:10.8, a little more than a dozen seconds ahead of Heather Mooney of Middlebury. With two podium finishes, the Panthers scored 121 points to best UNH's 112, while Dartmouth finished fourth (80) with Vermont directly ahead in third (102).
The men's alpine team posted a flurry of solid runs the second time down Whiteface Mountain to finish second in the slalom. Senior
Ben Morse (Carrabassett Valley, Maine) put together two consistent runs to lead the Big Green in fifth place with a combined time of 1:52.93, tied with Fredrik Sandell of St. Michael's. After posting the 12th-fastest time on his first run, freshman Kevyn Read (Calgary, Alberta) ripped off the fifth-best second run to vault up to eighth at 1:53.08. Junior
Sam Macomber (Plymouth, New Hampshire) also moved up the standings with the eighth-best time on his second run to finish 12th in 1:53.63. But with Vermont sweeping the podium for the maximum 141 points, Dartmouth had to settle for second with exactly 100 while St. Michael's (82) came in third.
The afternoon run was the women's undoing, unfortunately, as three Big Green skiers — two with top-10 times on the first run — did not finish their second run. Freshman
Libby Gibson (Jamaica, Vermont) managed to sneak into the top 10 with a combined time of 1:56.79, and junior
Lizzie Kistler (Santa Rosa, California), placed 16th at 1:01.41 and senior
Abby Fucigna (Hopkinton, Massachusetts) rounded out the scoring in 39th at 2:04.17. Like the Catamount men, Vermont's women swept the podium led by Elli Terwiel at 1:52.85, and Dartmouth finished fifth with 68 points.
The 2015 season will conclude in two weeks at the NCAA Championships, which will also take place at Lake Placid on March 11-14.
