PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The No. 54 Dartmouth men's tennis team wrapped up the weekend with a 5-2 victory over Penn at Hamlin Tennis Courts on Sunday.
The Big Green picked up its second victory of the weekend and improved to 11-10 overall and 2-2 in Ivy League play, while the Quakers dropped their fifth consecutive match, falling to 14-8 and 0-5 in conference action.
“Our players showed a lot of toughness today,” head coach Chris Drake said. “Penn came out and really pushed us – as we knew they would – and we responded with a tremendous effort on all six singles courts. I'm really happy with the tenacity we showed across the board. This was a successful weekend on the road for our team against two very good Ivy foes.”
Penn had a 6-2 victory at No. 3 doubles to start the day. A 6-2 win by juniors Dovydas Sakinis and Brendan Tannenbaum over Nicholai Westergaard and Jeremy Court at No. 1 and a 6-4 win by sophomore Max Schmidt and senior Chris Kipouras over Marshall Sharp and Matt Nardella at No. 2 gave Dartmouth a one-point edge.
Sophomore George Wall won the first singles point of the afternoon, defeating Sharp, 7-5, 6-2, at the No. 5 position. At No. 1, Sakinis fell to Court in the first set, 6-1, before taking the other two, 6-3, 6-2. The junior, who is ranked 53rd in the nation, is now 4-0 in Ivy League play.
At the No. 2 singles, Kipouras defeated Blaine Willenborg, 6-4, 7-5, and at No. 6, Schmidt had a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Westergaard to end the day.
Dartmouth's final road match of the 2015 season will take place on Friday, April 17, when the Green travel to Providence to face No. 61 Brown at 2 p.m.
