HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth women's tennis sophomore Taylor Ng was named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regional Player to Watch, as announced by the organization on Tuesday. The last Big Green player to earn this award was Molly Scott in 2009.
As stated by the ITA on its website, the award is bestowed upon a player who has had an outstanding collegiate year, but has not yet reached the finals of an ITA National event or won an ITA Regional Championship event.
As of May 1, Ng was ranked 97th in the country in singles play. At the conclusion of the regular season, she was unanimously named the Ivy League Player of the Year – the program's first since 1999 – and was tabbed a first-team All-Ivy selection for singles and doubles.
Based on her ITA ranking, Ng was one of 15 players to automatically qualify for the NCAA Singles Championship, which will be played from May 20-25 at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas. She will represent the Ivy League as the conference's only singles qualifier and is the first Dartmouth individual ever to be selected to play.
The Haddonfield, New Jersey, native is currently 36-6 in singles action, including a remarkable 21-1 at the No. 1 position.
In the first and second round of the NCAA Championship over the weekend, both of her singles matches went unfinished. In the team's 4-1 victory over William & Mary on Saturday, she was in a three-set battle with a player ranked 53rd in the country when the match was clinched for Dartmouth. In the 4-0 loss to No. 2 North Carolina the next day, she was still on the court battling the No. 7 player in the nation when the Tar Heels earned its fourth point.
