THIS WEEKEND
The Dartmouth field hockey team is back in action this weekend with a pair of non-conference tilts. The team will finish its three-game homestand to open the year on Friday when they host Northeastern at 3 p.m. The Big Green will then head south on I-91 to take on UMass Sunday afternoon in Amherst.
LAST TIME OUT
The Green split their season-opening weekend against UMass Lowell and New Hampshire, falling 3-2 in overtime to the former, while defeating the latter, 4-2.
SCOUTING THE HUSKIES
Northeastern comes to Hanover with a 1-3 record, having won its most recent outing, 2-1, against Providence on Sunday afternoon. Kristen Abreu leads the team with two goals and four points, while Natalie Stewart and June Curry-Lindahl each had a goal and an assist to rank second in scoring with three points. Becky Garner has been in goal all 284 minutes and has a 3.21 goals against average to go along with her .689 save percentage.
AGAINST NORTHEASTERN
Northeastern owns an 11-2 advantage in the series between the two programs, including a 2-0 win last season in Boston. Dartmouth's last win against the Huskies came on Oct. 10, 1987, edging Northeastern, 3-2.
SCOUTING THE MINUTEWOMEN
UMass will be opening their new home facility this weekend with a pair of games against UMass Lowell on Friday and the Dartmouth tilt on Sunday. The Gladchuck Field Hockey Complex is the first home built specifically to serve the program in the 40-year history of UMass field hockey. The Minutewomen enter the weekend 2-2 overall with wins over Northeastern and BU and are led offensively by Melanie Kreusch and her six points on three goals. In net, Sam Carlino has played all 289 minutes of action and boasts a 2.43 goals against average and a .744 save percentage.
AGAINST UMASS
These two have not met since the start of the 2012 season when Dartmouth bested UMass, 3-1, in Amherst to open the fall. Both programs would travel down to Maryland's Terrapin Invitational the following weekend, but did not play each other again.
TWO-FER WEEKEND
After coming into the weekend with just one goal in three-plus seasons of play, senior Rebecca Hu returned to the lineup and delivered with a goal against each of her team's first two opponents. Hu — who had been sidelined midway through last season with an injury — was granted a fifth season and made the most of her first time back on the field with a goal against both UMass and UNH. For her play, Hu was tabbed as the DartmouthSports.com Female Athlete of the Week.
JUST IN TIME
Junior Heather Zezzo picked a nice time to score her first goal of the season, netting Dartmouth's third marker of the game against UNH in the 55th minute. The tally proved to be the game winner as the Wildcats scored their second marker of the afternoon just eight minutes later.
MAKING IT COUNT
Junior Paige Duffy had a solid introduction into the Dartmouth starting lineup for the first time in her collegiate career last weekend. Duffy was solid, making seven saves, in her first career start in the opener against UMass Lowell, despite suffering the loss in overtime. She would pick up her first victory just two days later, however, as she stopped four shots in a 4-2 win against the Wildcats.
