HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth sailing team sent troops to four different locations over the weekend, finishing in the top 10 in all of them. The Big Green's highest finish was at the Regis Bowl, where they took second place out of 14 teams.
At Boston University's Regis Bowl, Dartmouth wrapped up the weekend with 78 points, just 13 behind the host Terriers with 65 and ahead of Bowdoin in third with 86 points. Senior Sarah Williams and junior Sophie Kerr sailed in the A-Division, while senior Hope Wilson and freshman Emma White made up the B-Division, combining for 12 top-five finishes and never ending up out of the top nine in any of the 18 races.
Also competing in Boston were senior Hunter Johnstone, sophomores Nathaniel Johansson and Madeleine Walker, and freshman Rebecca McElvain, who took part in the Hood Trophy at Tufts and placed fourth out of 20 teams with 119 points, behind BU with 110 and just one point ahead of Brown with 120. The quartet were able to make good choices on a very uncertain and shifty course to finish with seven top-five finishes, including two firsts, while ending up out of the top-10 just three times.
Senior Thomas Gallagher and sophomore Erik Weis were the Green's lone competitors at the New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association (NEISA) Singlehanded Qualifiers at Yale and, although they had to deal with large pressure changes and huge direction swings, both managed to sail consistently despite the big ups and downs in the racing. Weis capped the weekend by placing eighth with 145 points, while Gallagher placed 24th with 282, ending up with a total of four top-five finishes.
Traveling the furthest to compete in the St. Mary's College of MD Fall Interconference Regatta were senior Abigail Rohman and juniors Madeleine Cooney, Charlie Lalumiere and Patrick Floyd. The Big Green ended up in fifth place out of 18 teams with 296 points, just three ahead of U.S. Merchant Marine in sixth with 299. Dartmouth combined for 13 top-five finishes, including four firsts.
Five regattas are on tap for Dartmouth next weekend. The Green will head to Coast Guard for the Danmark Trophy, Connecticut College for the Women's Invite, Salve Regina for the Olympians, and Fordham for the Jesuit, leaving some sailors at home to host the Hewitt Trophy.
