HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth sailing competed in just two races over the weekend, sending some athletes to Coast Guard for the Danmark Trophy while keeping a group at home for the Hewitt Trophy.
The Big Green traveled to Connecticut for Coast Guard's Danmark Trophy, ending the day in sixth place out of 18 teams with 165 points, behind Roger Williams in fifth with 156 and just three ahead of Brown with 168 points.
Representing Dartmouth at Coast Guard were Hunter Johnstone, Rebecca McElvain and Tom Gallagher in the A-Division and Nathaniel Johansson, Sophie Kerr and Hope Wilson were in the B-Division. Luckily, Hurricane Joaquin failed to deliver on the 40+ knot conditions and instead gave the Green a variable breeze and allowed them to combine for 15 top-10 finishes.
Competing on home territory on Lake Mascoma, Dartmouth placed eighth out of 14 teams at the Hewitt Trophy with 256 points, finishing just one point behind Rhode Island in seventh with 255 and 11 ahead of Northeastern with 267 points.
Nate Greason and Lisa Genthner were in the A-Division, Mary Amis and Christopher Williford were in the B-Division and Emma White and Audrey Bransfield raced in the C-Division. While facing some tricky, inconsistent sailing conditions, Dartmouth also had to deal with sub-50 degree temperatures. Despite the cold, the Big Green totaled five first-place finishes, one second and one third, and combined for 10 top-10 finishes.
Next weekend, Dartmouth will race in the N.E. Sloop Championship at Salve Regina, the Moody Trophy at Rhode Island, the Lee Arnoff Trophy at HWS, the Barnett Trophy at Bowdoin and the Women's Navy Fall.
