THIS WEEKEND
Dartmouth women's hockey will play two ECAC Hockey games on the road this weekend, traveling to New York to first face No. 5/5 Clarkson on Friday before going down the road to take on St. Lawrence on Saturday.
LAST TIME OUT
Dartmouth played at Thompson Arena for the first time in 2016 over the weekend, dropping conference games to No. 10 Colgate (4-2) and Cornell (5-3).
Versus Colgate
Against the Raiders on Friday, A combined 14 shots were taken in a quiet first period where neither team was able to get quite close enough to the net to put itself in a scoring position. At 18:49, a minute into the power play, Ottenbreit got the puck following quick passes between senior Olivia Whitford and sophomore Brooke Ahbe and sent it flying from the top of the left circle, sneaking it behind netminder Ashlynne Rando. The Green enjoyed almost an entire period with a one-goal lead until two markers scored less than a minute apart gave Colgate a 2-1 advantage. At 4:12 in the third, Breanne Wilson-Bennett got her second of the night and the eventual game-winner. Dartmouth got one back at 13:30 in the third when Laura Stacey intercepted a pass and sent it to Lindsey Allen, who shot to the right of Rando while simultaneously sliding to the right of the net. An empty netter by Bailey Larson capped the game.
Versus Cornell
The next day against the Big Red, Stacey led the team with two goals and an assist on the third, scored by Ailish Forfar. Shannon Ropp appeared in net for the first time since the exhibition game against McGill, making 24 saves in the loss. The very first shot of the game resulted in a goal. Stacey intercepted the puck beside the Big Green's net, skated freely to the right past a number of players in red, and shot to the left of the netminder, getting Dartmouth on the board just 30 seconds into the game. Cornell countered with a Taylor Woods goal at 2:48 and a Christian Higham tally at 8:21 to enter the second period with a 2-1 edge over the Green. The Big Red would hold that one-goal lead until 8:42 in the second, when Stacey received a perfect pass from Emma Korbs and pocketed it in the right corner, tying the score at two-all. Ropp made a great point-blank save with less than two minutes to play, but was not so lucky on the next shot, when Kaitlin Doering netted a shorthanded goal with 18 seconds remaining to give Cornell a 3-2 edge heading into the third. Cornell increased its lead at 2:58 courtesy of Cassandra Poudrier's shot to the right of Ropp, but Forfar got the Big Green back within one just 25 seconds later, getting to the puck before Boissonnault could and flicking it into the right of the cage. At 13:58, Higham scored what proved to be the last goal of the game.
SCOUTING CLARKSON
The Golden Knights are entering the weekend with an overall record of 17-3-2 and 5-3-2 in ECAC Hockey play, which puts them fourth in the standings and just two spots ahead of the Big Green. All three of Clarkson's losses this season (RPI, Quinnipiac, Colgate) occurred after facing Dartmouth on Halloween, as it had a near-perfect record of 10-0-1 at that point. Since falling to the Raiders on Dec. 4, the Golden Knights have been on the way up and are on a three-game streak. On Dec. 5, they took down Cornell (4-0) and returned after break to defeat Yale (5-2) and Brown (7-0). Cayley Mercer still leads the team with 35 points (17G, 18A), while Olivia Howe is second with 26 points (10G, 16A).
LAST TIME AGAINST THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS
Less than three months ago, Dartmouth and Clarkson skated to a 3-3 draw inside Thompson Arena. After falling behind by three goals in the first period, the Big Green mounted a fevered comeback over the final 40 minutes of regulation to tie the Golden Knights. Clarkson scored a trio of tallies in the first 20 minutes to give itself a comfortable lead heading into the second period. Things turned around for Dartmouth in the final three minutes of the second. Ahbe got the home team on the board, receiving the puck from Stacey at the top of the crease and beating Clarkson netminder Shea Tiley to the low glove side. At 19:34 and with just one second remaining on the power play, a quick pass between Eleni Tebano and Stacey made its way to Ottenbreit, who sent the puck into the right corner with a slapshot from the top left circle. Five minutes into the third, Tebano intercepted the puck and passed to Korbs, who carried it past two defenders and sent it to Allen, who flicked it into the net.
SCOUTING ST. LAWRENCE
With a record of 11-10-1 and 5-5-0 in conference action, the Saints have had a relatively good start to the second half of their season. St. Lawrence returned to the ice in 2016 to defeat Merrimack (6-2) on Jan. 6 and, two days later, handed Brown a 2-1 loss on the road. Most recently, the Saints had a 5-2 loss to Yale. Three players are tied for first on the team with 19 points. Brooke Webster has eight goals and 11 assists, Kennedy Marchment has netted seven goals and added 12 helpers, and Amanda Boulier has scored six goals and tacked on 13 assists.
LAST TIME AGAINST THE SAINTS
In just its second game of the 2015-16 season, Dartmouth fell to St. Lawrence, 4-2, at home on Oct. 30, following a first period that featured four goals in a 12-minute span. Megan Armstrong opened scoring at 3:42 in the first, but the visitors did not enjoy a lead for long, as Allen found the back of the net less than three minutes later. Forfar gave Dartmouth its first lead at 11:45, but the Saints would tie it up at 16:06. After such a fast-paced first period, the second was a little quieter, even though a combined 19 shots were taken. At 15:46, Alex Moore broke the tie and the Green fought hard to tie the score in the third, but fell short. At 19:38. Boulier scored an empty netter to put a comeback by the home team out of reach.
