HANOVER, N.H. – A wild affair ended Saturday night with the Dartmouth men's hockey team clinging to a 4-2 ECAC Hockey win against No. 18 St. Lawrence at Thompson Arena.
The play of senior goalie Charles Grant early in the game helped the Big Green (8-8-1, 5-5-0) weather the storm of a flurry of early shots from the Saints (10-10-2, 4-5-1). By the end, the visiting team would outshoot the home team, 39-22, but was done in by the play of Dartmouth's netminder.
Grant would stand on his head late, coming up big on numerous occasions to keep the visitors off the board while on two power-play opportunities. The Nova Scotia native finished with a season-high 37 saves, including 16 in the final period.
“What a fantastic game between two teams with a lot of skill on the ice,” head coach Bob Gaudet '81 remarked afterward. “I was really pleased with the way our guys played all weekend to come away with four points against those two teams (St. Lawrence and Clarkson).
“Our goaltender was outstanding tonight,” Gaudet added. “Chuck (Grant) has been so good for us lately and tonight was another example of that. The team really feeds off his composure and play back there.”
The lone goal of the opening period came from Troy Crema on the power play with just over two minutes left. The junior found the back of the net on a wrist shot from the high slot, making up for a goal he appeared to score Friday night against Clarkson only to have it called back.
Seniors Brett Patterson and Jack Barre notched markers in the middle frame around a SLU goal from captain Brian Ward. Patterson's goal came on a delayed penalty and was a thing of beauty as the versatile forward danced around the Saints' defense in the offensive zone before going high over the blocker of goaltender Kyle Hayton for the second tally.
Barre's team-leading seventh of the season came on a broken play as it appeared St. Lawrence thought the play was offsides. Kevin Neiley batted the puck sitting at his skates over to his left and the streaking Barre for the heavy slap shot and the eventual game-winning goal.
The visitors pulled within one midway through the third on a loose-puck goal from Alexander Dahl at the side of the net. However, that would be the last puck to get behind Grant on this night as he stood tall in the final minutes to seal the win.
Team captain Brad Schierhorn hit the empty net after tremendous work by Barre and Carl Hesler to clear the defensive zone with the last seconds ticking off the clock.
The weekend sweep at home gives Dartmouth 10 points in ECAC Hockey play and also pushed its record to 5-1-0 since the start of January. All five wins have come at home in that stretch with the team scoring five goals three times and at least three in each.
The Big Green were strong on the power-play, scoring twice on six chances. However, the special-teams play was highlighted by a 3-for-3 night on the penalty kill. SLU managed eight shots on goal in the two man-advantage opportunities in the third, but were denied by Grant and the outstanding play of the defense in front of him, who finished with 13 blocks in the game.
Dartmouth heads out on the road next weekend to take on No. 8 Cornell and Colgate on Jan. 22-23 in Ithaca and Hamilton, New York.
