THIS WEEKEND
The Dartmouth women's hockey team will have a quiet weekend with just one game. The Big Green will head to Cambridge to face Harvard at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
LAST TIME OUT
Dartmouth traveled to the North Country for a pair of ECAC Hockey games last weekend, narrowly falling to No. 5/5 Clarkson (1-0) before breaking its 10-game losing streak by tying St. Lawrence (2-2).
Versus Clarkson
The Golden Knights wasted no time, scoring just 1:18 into the first period. After Clarkson spent the opening minutes repeatedly testing netminder Robyn Chemago, the Big Green seemed to find their stride, taking a handful of shots that had to be saved by Shea Tiley. Hailey Noronha had a big presence in the first, forcing Tiley to make moves early on before making a huge block a few minutes later. Dartmouth almost tied it in the final minutes when Zoe Brennan hit the left pipe, but the puck bounced out of danger. The teams headed into the intermission with the Knights leading, 1-0. Although neither the Big Green nor the Golden Knights could find the back of the net in the second, the stanza was anything but quiet. Both teams had a number of chances at a tally, but the goalies held off every attempt. Chemago stood firm, stopping all 19 shots sent her way. In an aggressive, fast-paced third period, Dartmouth came alive in the final five minutes of the game, making eight attempts to even the score in less than two minutes. Alas, Tiley and the Clarkson defense had different ideas and turned away every one. Time eventually ran out before either team could make moves.
Versus St. Lawrence
Unlike the night before against Clarkson, it took until halfway through the first period for a puck to find its way into the back of the net against St. Lawrence. At 12:09, just seconds after the faceoff, the Saints' Alex Moore opened scoring and gave the home team a one-goal lead that would not last long. Exactly 60 seconds later and shortly after a St. Lawrence penalty, starting with a give-and-go from Kate Landers to Kennedy Ottenbreit, the latter dragged the puck to the middle of the ice for a slapshot goal and her eighth tally of the season. Saint Lawrence came back for the second period wanting more, sending five consecutive shots flying at Dartmouth's goal, but Chemago was able to move quickly and save four of them, all of which were at point-blank range. At 15:26, with four players from either team on the ice, following a swift back-and-forth between Ailish Forfar, Laura Stacey and Emma Korbs, Forfar pocketed the puck in the right side of the net to give Dartmouth its first lead of the afternoon. The Big Green worked hard to keep a goal between them and the Saints, but St. Lawrence's relentless efforts eventually paid off, as Justine Reyes tied things at two-all at 8:58 in the third. Both teams raced feverishly against the clock to get the winning goal, but time ran out before either could do so and the game went to overtime. Just five shots were taken during the extra five minutes and the game ended in a draw.
SCOUTING HARVARD
After 79 consecutive weeks of being nationally ranked – dating back to Oct. 15, 2012 – Harvard did not appear in either the USCHO.com or the USA Today polls for this week, but are receiving votes for both. The Crimson are entering Saturday's game with an overall record of 10-7-1 and a 7-5-1 mark in ECAC Hockey play and are riding a three-game losing streak. Harvard fell to St. Lawrence, 2-0, before being defeated by Clarkson, 5-2. To cap things off, they dropped a 2-0 decision to Boston College three days later. Leading the team is Miye D'Oench with 22 points (10G, 12A).
LAST TIME AGAINST THE CRIMSON
Dartmouth opened the 2015-16 season in spectacular fashion, knocking off No. 5 Harvard, 2-1, in front of a vocal Thompson Arena on Oct. 23, 2015. The Crimson got on the board first with a D'Oench power-play marker at 12:54, just five seconds away from the teams returning to even strength. That would be all that beat Chemago as the Slave Lake, Alberta, native finished the night with 20 saves. Allen's first goal of the season was initially reviewed to determine if it indeed crossed the line before the green light ending the period illuminated. Upon review by the referees, the goal was confirmed as it hit the back of the net with 0.4 showing on the clock, sending the teams to the first intermission tied at 1-1. The goal was the result of a great pass from Stacey at the blueline. Stacey sent a backhanded saucer pass to the high slot and onto Allen's stick where her infuriating patience paid off with the first Big Green tally of the season. Ottenbreit's eventual game winner was the result of some nifty passing from Allen and Landers entering the zone. Two drop passes saw the puck eventually land on Ottenbreit's tape where she snapped off a wrister that beat Harvard's Emerance Maschmeyer. A late third-period push by the Crimson fell short as Dartmouth earned its second straight win against its rivals from Cambridge for the first time since the 2010-11 and 2011-12 campaigns.
