THIS WEEKEND
With just four home games remaining in the 2015-16 season, the Dartmouth women's hockey team will welcome No. 9/9 Princeton and No. 4/4 Quinnipiac to Thompson Arena for what are sure to be two aggressive ECAC Hockey contests. Quinnipiac is first in the conference standings by two games, while Princeton is tied for second with Clarkson. Both games are being played earlier than usual to account for the men's contests directly after.
LAST TIME OUT
The Big Green played just one game last weekend, falling to Harvard, 2-0, at the Bright-Landry Hockey Center on Saturday. Dartmouth looked to make moves early on, as senior Laura Stacey fired at netminder Emerance Maschmeyer from the right circle just four seconds after the first faceoff, but the Crimson goalie was able to make the save. It was Harvard that struck first, getting on the board at 9:02 with a Karly Heffernan marker. Another tally for the home team at 2:11 in the second, this time by Lexie Laing, gave Harvard a 2-0 lead. The Green picked up the pace near the middle of the period and threatened with a couple of shots from Stacey, sophomore Devon Moir and freshman Caroline Shaunessy, but Maschmeyer managed to stop each one. The Big Green and the Crimson took an even 11 shots throughout the second. Junior netminder Robyn Chemago stood her ground in the third, acting quickly and aggressively to save every shot sent her direction. Midway through the period, seniors Ailish Forfar and Lindsey Allen put together a great play and tried to tip the puck behind Maschmeyer, but she got her pad in the way just in time. The Crimson outshot the Big Green, 40-23. Dartmouth went 0-for-2 on the power play and held Harvard to 0-for-1. Chemago made 38 saves, which included 15 in the third period, while Maschmeyer had 31.
SCOUTING PRINCETON
This season has been kind to the Tigers, who are on an 11-game winning streak and have not dropped a contest since Nov. 21. Princeton has played a tough schedule so far, hosting six straight games at Hobey Baker Rink before hitting the road for seven consecutive contests that span an entire month. The Tigers will end 2015-16 with four in a row at home. On Monday, Princeton played its final non-conference game of the year against UConn, defeating the Huskies, 4-0, on the road. Karlie Lund leads the team with 22 points (9G, 13A).
LAST TIME AGAINST THE TIGERS
Three goals within five minutes in the second period helped lift Princeton over Dartmouth, 3-1, in the Big Green's final road game of the first half of the season on Dec. 5. Midway through the first period and 57 seconds into the power play, Stacey intercepted a Tiger pass and, even after having the puck knocked off her stick, she regained possession and shot it just under the crossbar to give Dartmouth a 1-0 lead. After the Green held the Tigers scoreless for over half an hour, the home team turned things around by tying the score at 10:30 with a Morgan Sly marker and taking a one-goal lead 33 seconds later courtesy of Lund's flick into the left corner. Cassidy Tucker added one of her own at 15:10 and, after an extended video review, Princeton ended the second ahead, 3-1. The third period was as aggressive as the previous two and both teams had a number of opportunities, but neither goalie would give in. With 25 seconds remaining and an empty net, Princeton got its fourth to end the game.
SCOUTING QUINNIPIAC
The Bobcats enter the weekend with just one loss – a 4-3 drop to Yale on Halloween – in their 25 games. During that time, Quinnipiac has had 10 shutouts and had a 57-10 scoring advantage, never allowed its opponents to net more than two goals. The Bobcats strayed from conference play recently, taking down Robert Morris twice (3-2, 2-0) before defeating Boston University (6-1). Taylar Cianfarano leads in goals (22), assists (17) and points (39) and leads the conference in both goals and points.
LAST TIME AGAINST THE BOBCATS
In its third of five consecutive road games, Dartmouth fell to No. 4/4 Quinnipiac, 7-1, inside the High Point Solutions Arena on Dec. 4. The Bobcats took advantage of their power play opportunities, as both of their goals in the opening stanza – scored at 3:39 and 9:05 – were consequences of Dartmouth penalties. Quinnipiac added one more with 23 seconds remaining to end the first period with a 3-0 edge. The Bobcats soon made it 5-0, finding the back of the net at 7:09 and 8:25. At 11:55, Stacey got in the way of a Quinnipiac pass and fired a rocket from the right, tipping over netminder Sydney Rossman's glove and burying into the left corner. This tally broke the Bobcat goalie's four-game shutout streak that had lasted for 291 minutes. Before the close of the second, the Bobcats got one more to make it 6-1. Quinnipiac got one more marker at 3:20 in the third to close the game. Dartmouth tried its hand at a few more shots, but was thwarted by Rossman each time.
