THIS WEEKEND
After taking a week away from the ice, the Dartmouth women's hockey team will return to Thompson Arena for a pair of ECAC Hockey games this weekend, taking on No. 8/8 Quinnipiac on Friday and No. 10/10 Princeton on Saturday. These will be the Big Green's final home contests for almost a month, as they will not play at Thompson again until a Dec. 7th game against Boston College.
LAST TIME OUT
The weekend before last, Dartmouth took its first road trip of the 2016-17 season to New York, falling to No. 6/7 St. Lawrence (2-0) and No. 8 Clarkson (6-1).
Against St. Lawrence
Christie Honor got the nod in net, appearing in and starting her first game of the season. She played the entire 60 minutes, ending the day with a career-high 30 saves. Hailey Noronha, Brooke Ahbe, Tess Bracken and Alyssa Baker all had a pair of shots on goal.
The puck spent the opening minutes of the first period in Dartmouth's zone, testing Honor, who had to make four quick saves. At 6:42, Kennedy Marchment got St. Lawrence on the board when she pocketed Brooke Webster's rebounded shot.
The Saints almost got their second of the afternoon less than five minutes into the second when Webster's shot got behind Honor, but the Dartmouth goaltender fell on the puck to make the stop. Less than 30 seconds after returning from a timeout, Kayla Vespa picked up the puck on a breakaway and sent it into the left corner of the net at 13:04 to make it 2-0 in St. Lawrence's favor. Honor had 12 saves to bring her total after two periods to 20.
Dartmouth found its stride in the third period, taking a game-high seven shots on goal to try and lessen St. Lawrence's lead. Caroline Shaunessy had a good shot at a goal in the final minute of play, but the clock ran out before the visitors had any more chances.
Against Clarkson
The following day, Christina Rombaut scored her first collegiate goal in Dartmouth's loss to Clarkson at Cheel Arena. Baker and Kennedy Ottenbreit both picked up their first helpers of the year. Honor played her second full game of the season, ending the day with 28 saves, while Ahbe led with four shots on goal.
With seven minutes to play in the first, a Golden Knight took a shot from the blueline and had it redirected toward Honor by a teammate. The puck flipped up and might have landed behind Honor, but was cleared quickly by Devon Moir and Shaunessy. Goals by Clarkson at 12:49 and 18:31 gave the home team a 2-0 lead heading into the second period.
The Golden Knights got their third of the afternoon at 5:20 when Brielle Bellerive's shot was initially saved by Honor but fell out of the Big Green goalie's glove and slipped into the net. At 13:20, Baker got the puck from Ottenbreit in the right corner and, when a handful of Golden Knights started to swarm, Rombaut took the puck off Baker's stick, outsmarting Tiley by driving toward the center before shooting to the left. Dartmouth had a bit of an offensive resurgence in the second to lessen Clarkson's lead in shots to 19-15.
The Golden Knights got their three-goal lead back at 6:22 in the third. Ella Shelton shot to the left of the cage and, although Honor got a piece of it with her glove, it was not enough to stop the puck from making its way into the net. Clarkson got two more late in the third to make it 6-1, the last of which came with a second remaining on the clock.
SCOUTING QUINNIPIAC
The Bobcats enter the weekend with an overall record of 7-4-1 and are 2-2-0 in conference play. They opened the year on a four-game winning streak after defeating Maine (5-4, 3-0), UConn (3-0) and UNH (3-0). Quinnipiac opened ECAC Hockey play by taking down Yale (4-1) and Brown (8-0), but dropped both games this past weekend to Clarkson (4-1) and St. Lawrence (1-0). Like last year, Taylar Cianfarano leads the team with nine goals, five assists and 14 points.
LAST TIME AGAINST THE BOBCATS
Dartmouth went 0-2 against Quinnipiac in 2015-16. On Jan. 30, the Big Green cut a two-goal deficit in half courtesy of a career-first by Noronha, but were unable to fully mount a comeback and fell to the Bobcats, 2-1 at home. After a scoreless first period, Quinnipiac broke the draw with a goal at 9:23 in the second, only to make it 2-0 in the Bobcats' favor at 3:41 in the third. Noronha got an unassisted tally at 10:27 in the third, but Dartmouth ran out of time to get another. Robyn Chemago had 19 saves between the pipes.
SCOUTING PRINCETON
The Tigers enter Friday's game against Harvard with a record of 3-2-1 and 1-2-1 in league action. They played just two non-conference games against Providence – both of which ended in victories – before opening ECAC Hockey play against Brown (W, 4-0) and Yale (T, 1-1). Like Quinnipiac, Princeton dropped its games to St. Lawrence (3-1) and Clarkson (4-2) this past weekend. Cassidy Tucker leads the Tigers with seven points from three goals and four assists.
LAST TIME AGAINST THE TIGERS
Last season, Dartmouth dropped both of its games to Princeton by scores of 4-1. On Jan. 29, the Big Green were not able to counter the Tigers' trio of third-period goals, falling to Princeton at home. The home team got on the board first at 4:38 in the second period when Laura Stacey backhanded the puck to the right of the net in her 100th career game. At 17:57, the Tigers tied the score at 1-1 and went on to score three goals in the next period to end the game.
AND IN NET…
Chemago and Honor have almost perfectly split their time between the pipes; Chemago played the first two games of the season against Northeastern and Harvard, making 56 saves and allowing seven goals for a .889 save percentage and 3.53 goals against average. Honor played the last two contests against St. Lawrence and Clarkson, making 58 stops and allowing eight goals for a .879 save percentage and 4.04 goals against average. Dartmouth's other goaltender, Shannon Ropp, has not appeared in a regular-season game, but had a strong performance in the exhibition contest against McGill last month.
