THIS WEEKEND
The day after returning from a two-game series with Maine, the Dartmouth women's hockey team is packing up and heading out for its second weekend on the road, this time heading to New York for a pair of ECAC Hockey games against Colgate and Cornell.
LAST TIME OUT
The Big Green played their only two-game series of the season earlier this week against Maine, splitting a game apiece with the Black Bears.
Game One
After two weeks away from competition, Dartmouth returned to the ice in dramatic fashion, defeating Maine by a score of 4-0 in the first of two games against the Black Bears at the Harold Alfond Arena on Monday evening.
Christina Rombaut led Dartmouth with her two points, assisting on the first goal before netting her own to close scoring. Six other players ended the night with a point apiece. Brooke Ahbe scored the game winner in the first, while Rose Falzone and Bailee Brekke added a tally apiece in the second. Eleni Tebano, Mackenzie St. Onge and Caroline Shaunessy were also credited with assists. Robyn Chemago earned her first shutout of the season and the seventh of her career, ending the game with 31 saves.
The Big Green did a good job controlling the puck in the early stages of the first period, spending a large chunk of time deep in Black Bear territory. That paid off at 8:46, when Ahbe got her first point of her junior season, knocking the puck behind goaltender Carly Jackson, who lost track of it as it slowly rolled into the net.
Dartmouth clearly was not satisfied with its one-goal lead, as it netted two more in the second. At 7:56, Falzone broke away and shot to Jackson's left and, although the goalie made the save, she couldn't hold on to the puck and knocked it toward the Green freshman. Falzone picked up her own rebound on the right and scored her second goal in as many games. At 12:28, Brekke got her first collegiate goal and second point of the year – a slapshot from the blue line following a cross from Shaunessy – to make it 3-0 in Dartmouth's favor.
At 14:59 in the third, Rombaut got her second point of the game with a power-play tally, a beautiful goal from the right post that flew over the goalie's head following a pass from St. Onge. That was St. Onge's first point since the 2014-15 season. Dartmouth tried its luck and continued to pepper Jackson with shots, but the Black Bear was able to stop all of them.
Game Two
The following night, the Big Green suffered a 3-2 loss at the hands of the Black Bears.
Tebano had her first multi-point performance of the year, assisting on both of Dartmouth's goals and being named the game's third star after the fact. She has ended the last four games with at least one point. Kennedy Ottenbreit and Emma Korbs were credited with the Big Green's tallies.
After holding Maine to zero goals through 60 minutes on Monday night, the Black Bears started game two strongly, striking first at 2:26 in the first, courtesy of Tereza Vanisova. That lead did not last long, as Dartmouth tied the score at 7:20 when Tebano intercepted a Maine pass and sent the puck to Ottenbreit, who buried it in the right corner for her first tally of the season.
Vanisova proved to be a nuisance, breaking the tie to score her second of the game at 18:39 to give the home team a one-goal lead heading into the second.
The Black Bears opened the second period by scoring a shorthanded tally to give them a 3-1 edge. Less than 30 seconds after Maine was called for a penalty, Lydia Murray hit the pipe, picked up her rebound and found the back of the net at 4:35. Dartmouth got its chance at a power play goal when two Maine players were put in the box 30 seconds apart and, following a mad scramble in front of the net, Korbs made it a 3-2 game at 13:03 with her second of the season.
Neither squad could break through the other team's defense in the third. The Big Green had an 8-6 shot advantage in the final period, finding themselves with a number of opportunities to tie the score, but netminder Mariah Fujimagari was a force to be reckoned with and turned away each of Dartmouth's attempts.
SCOUTING COLGATE
Even though the Raiders have gone undefeated in 15 of the 17 games, they are only sitting in fourth in the ECAC Hockey standings, which proves how strong the conference is this season. Colgate is 5-2-0 in the league, defeating Union (2-0), RPI (4-1), Cornell (2-1), Yale (4-3) and Brown (3-0), while falling to Princeton (7-2) and Quinnipiac (3-1). The Raiders enter the weekend on a two-game winning streak after taking down Mercyhurst twice (4-2, 5-1). Jessie Eldridge leads the team in goals (8), assists (17) and points (25).
LAST TIME AGAINST THE RAIDERS
Dartmouth dropped both of its games to Colgate in 2015-16. In their last contest of the season on Feb. 20, 2016, the Big Green dropped a 1-0 decision to the Raiders on the road. Christie Honor played her first complete game in net, stopping 34 shots throughout the game.
SCOUTING CORNELL
The Big Red sit right behind the Raiders in the conference standings in fifth, entering the weekend with an overall record of 6-4-1 and 4-2-1 in ECAC Hockey play. After going undefeated through four games, Cornell most recently fell to Wisconsin in two (3-0, 5-2). Kristin O'Neill has a team-leading seven goals and 11 points, while Hanna Bunton leads with seven helpers.
LAST TIME AGAINST THE BIG RED
Dartmouth went 0-2 against Cornell last year. In their penultimate game of 2015-16, the Big Green fell to the Big Green, 1-0, in a close, hard-fought game. Dartmouth outshot Cornell, 21-17, and held it to 0-for-4 on the power play. In net, Chemago had 30 saves to Paul Voorheis' 28.
AND IN NET…
Chemago had a good weekend in Orono, playing 119 minutes against the Black Bears. She earned her first shutout of the season on Monday and, overall, allowed just three goals while making 54 saves for a .947 save percentage and 1.51 goals against average. So far this season, she has started six games, played 360 minutes, allowed 14 goals while making 188 saves, and has a .931 save percentage and 2.33 goals against average. Honor was the starting goalie against both St. Lawrence and Clarkson, making 58 stops and allowing eight goals for a .879 save percentage and 4.04 goals against average. Dartmouth's other goaltender, Shannon Ropp, has not appeared in a regular-season game, but had a strong performance in the exhibition contest against McGill.
