THIS WEEKEND
The Dartmouth women's hockey team will end the 2015-16 season this weekend, returning to New York to take on Cornell on Friday night and Colgate the following afternoon.
LAST TIME OUT
The Big Green ended the weekend with a record of 1-1, defeating Union, 3-1, on Friday before falling to Rensselaer by a score of 2-1 on Saturday.
Against the Dutchwomen
Dartmouth picked up an important two points in its win over Union. Lindsey Allen led the Green by assisting on all three goals and Kennedy Ottenbreit was right behind with two points. The second shot of the game resulted in a goal for Dartmouth. Allen fired at netminder Melissa Black, but the shot was blocked and rebounded to Caroline Shaunessy, who swept the puck into the right corner to give the Green a 1-0 lead just 57 seconds into the opening stanza. Union's Jacyn Reeves had her shot tip off Robyn Chemago's glove to tie the score at 13:19. This proved to be the only goal Chemago would allow all night. Ottenbreit scored two goals within a minute and a half in the second period. Seconds after video review of a could-be Union goal went in Dartmouth's favor, she gave the Green their one-goal edge back at 2:13, only to increase the visitor's lead with another at 3:58. Allen assisted on both, while Alyssa Baker picked up the primary on the second tally. Although no goals were scored in the third, the Green had a number of opportunities. Dartmouth had a 15-3 shot advantage, forcing Black to move quickly to save all of them. The rookie goalie got her 1,000th save of the season halfway through the period.
Against the Engineers
The next day against RPI, Dartmouth would score the first goal, but would end up dropping a hard-fought game to the Engineers. Less than six minutes into the opening stanza, there was a give-and-go between Ottenbreit and Hailey Noronha, but RPI broke up the play when Noronha entered the offensive zone. Ottenbreit was able to get to the loose puck to take a shot, and Baker crashed the net to pick up the rebound. After extended video review, the officials ruled that the goal was good and Dartmouth took a 1-0 lead. The Green controlled much of the early parts of the second period, but the Engineers turned things around midway through, taking six consecutive shots at Dartmouth's net. Three were stopped by Chemago, two were blocked, and one hit the left pipe. With 13 seconds left, Brandi Banks shot through Chemago's legs to tie the score heading into the third. With the teams 4-on-4, RPI's Taylor Schwalbe intercepted a pass intended for a Dartmouth player and shot into the left corner of the net to give the Engineers an important one-goal lead with five and a half minutes to play. The Green pulled their goalie in an attempt to even the score and got multiple shots off, but time ran out before they could do so.
SCOUTING CORNELL
The Big Red enter the final weekend of the regular season with an overall record of 11-12-4 and a conference mark of 7-9-4 and are currently on a two-game winning streak after sweeping Brown and Yale last weekend by scores of 4-2. Their playoff situation is still very much in the air, as they could finish as high as sixth or as low as ninth depending on the outcomes of the two games. Hanna Bunton leads the team with 25 points (13G, 12A).
LAST TIME AGAINST THE BIG RED
Laura Stacey got the Big Green on the board just 30 seconds into the game on Jan. 9 at Thompson Arena, but Cornell answered with a pair of goals to enter the second period with a 2-1 edge. The Big Red would that one-goal lead until 8:42 in the second, when Stacey received a perfect pass from Emma Korbs and pocketed it in the right corner of the net. Appearing for the first time in net, Shannon Ropp made a great point-blank save with less than two minutes to play, but was not so lucky on the next shot, when Kaitlin Doering netted a shorthanded marker with 18 seconds remaining to make it 3-2 in favor of Cornell. The visitors increased their lead at 2:58 courtesy of Cassandra Poudrier's shot to the right, but Ailish Forfar got the Big Green back within one just 25 seconds later, getting to the puck before Boissonnault could and flicking it into the right of the cage. At 13:58, Higham scored what proved to be the last goal of the game.
SCOUTING COLGATE
The Raiders have had a good season in 2015-16, opening the weekend with a record of 19-6-7 and 11-4-5 in ECAC Hockey play. Last weekend, Colgate shutout Yale (2-0) before having a slightly closer victory over Brown the next day (3-2). The Raiders also had a 3-2 upset of No. 4 Quinnipiac the weekend before. Bailey Larson has a team-leading 28 points (10G, 18A).
LAST TIME AGAINST THE RAIDERS
On Jan. 8 at Thompson, Dartmouth fell to No. 10 Colgate, 4-2. A combined 14 shots were taken in a quiet first period where neither team was able to get quite close enough to the net to put itself in a scoring position. At 18:49, a minute into the power play, Ottenbreit got the puck following quick passes between Olivia Whitford and Brooke Ahbe and sent it flying from the top of the left circle, sneaking it behind netminder Ashlynne Rando. The Green enjoyed almost an entire period with a one-goal lead until two markers scored less than a minute apart gave the Raiders a 2-1 advantage. Breanne Wilson-Bennett scored at 18:53 and Lauren Wildfang had an unassisted tally at 19:35. At 4:12 in the third, Wilson-Bennett would net the game-winner. Dartmouth got one back at 13:30 in the third when Stacey intercepted a pass and sent it to Allen, who shot to the right of Rando while simultaneously sliding to the side of the net. An empty netter by Bailey Larson at 19:45 capped the game.
