MOBILE, Ala. – The Dartmouth softball team fell to Wichita State 6-1, before falling to Bowling Green 5-1 in the opening two games of the South Alabama Invitational.
With the losses, the Big Green open the season 0-2, while the Shockers improve to 5-6 and the Falcons improve to 4-5.
“It was nice to get outside and compete today," head coach Shannon Doepking said. "I was very happy with our pitching staff today and thought they did a great job making pitches. Defensively we have a lot of room to grow and a lot of learning moments to take from today that will make us better."
"We need to do a better job being aggressive and taking our hacks with a purpose," Doepking added. "All and all never happy with losing, but going to learn from it and get back at it tomorrow.”
In game one, Dartmouth jumped out to an early 1-0 lead. Senior Katie McEachern got things going for the Big Green with a single up the middle. On a sacrifice bunt by Taylor Ward, McEachern advanced to second before being driven home by a Morgan Martinelli single down the left field line. The base hit and RBI was the first of Martinelli's career in a Dartmouth uniform.
Senior Morgan McCalmon threw four scoreless innings, surrendering just one hit before Wichita State broke the game open in the fifth. Cacy Williams led the inning off with a solo homerun to right center to tie the game at 1-1.
Later in the fifth, with the bases loaded, two runs scored on an error. On the next play, a Paige Luellen single scored two more runs for Wichita State. The Shockers scored once more on an error to take a 6-1 lead. The Big Green tried to rally, after Ward singled and Karen Chaw reached on a fielder's choice, but Dartmouth could not complete the come back.
Game two got off to fast start for the Big Green after McEachern hit a solo shot to right center for her first home run of the season which game Dartmouth an early 1-0 lead in the first.
The Big Green tried to add to their lead in the top of the fourth when Martinelli doubled to left center to lead off the inning, but Dartmouth could not drive her home. In the bottom half of the inning, the Falcons went down in order as the Big Green took a 1-0 advantage into the fifth.
After a scoreless fifth, Bowling Green scored six runs in the sixth inning. Aspen Searle led the inning off with a double and scored after a base hit by Kayla Koch. Chelsea Raker scored when Trista Mokienko was hit by a pitch. A double by Kiley Sosby scored three more runs adding to the Falcons lead. Down 5-1, Dartmouth could not complete a late game comeback in the top of the seventh.
The Big Green return to the diamond tomorrow morning to take on the Falcons at 11 a.m. and South Alabama at 3:30 p.m.
