HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth women's hockey closed out its home slate in dramatic fashion with a 5-0 win over Brown on Senior Day at Thompson Arena on Saturday, playing in front of the biggest crowd the team has seen all season.
The Big Green picked up their first win of 2016 and improved to 5-16-3 and 5-10-3 in ECAC Hockey play, while the Bears fell to 3-19-3 overall and 1-14-3 in conference action. This loss for Brown came the night after a 3-3 tie at Harvard.
Senior Ailish Forfar and sophomore Hailey Noronha led the charge with three points apiece. Forfar had one goal and two assists and Noronha assisted on the last three tallies. Four other Big Green players ended the game with a point.
“It feels good to win after a long time,” head coach Mark Hudak said after the game. “I thought we played well last night and tonight but today, we got the bounces and created opportunities. We have four more games to go and I am looking forward to them.”
An own goal opened scoring for Dartmouth at 3:24 in the first period. Junior Kennedy Ottenbreit passed to senior Lindsey Allen at the top of the paint for an open look at the net. After Brown netminder Julianne Landry made an initial save, the Bears failed to clear the puck from danger, knocking it into their own net, much to the shock of Landry.
Even though the Green sported a 16-5 shot advantage in the first period, the start of the second was a little quieter, as it took almost four minutes for either team to take a shot due to the back-and-forth nature of the game.
At 12:59, a mere eight seconds after Brown was called for a penalty, Ottenbreit picked up her own rebound after a cross from classmate Eleni Tebano and shot to the left. The puck tipped off Landry's glove and fell into the net to give Dartmouth a 2-0 lead.
The Big Green got their third of the game at 7:24 of the third when Forfar won the faceoff and sent it to Stacey, who shot from the top of the left circle. Landry caught the puck in midair but lost her grip a split second later and watched as the puck slid in behind her. Stacey added a shorthanded empty netter at 17:37 and, with just three seconds remaining, Forfar snuck one in the right side of the net to end the game, causing the raucous Thompson Arena fans to go wild.
Dartmouth outshot Brown, 38-13, and went 2-for-4 with the extra man, while holding the Bears to 0-for-5. Junior Robyn Chemago picked up her first shutout since November and had 13 saves, and Landry had 33 stops in the loss.
It is all road games from here on out for the Big Green. Next weekend, Dartmouth will face Union on Friday and Rensselaer the next day, with the ECAC Hockey Tournament on the line.
