STILLWATER, Okla. – The Dartmouth softball team split a Friday evening doubleheader with Oklahoma State as the Big Green defeated the Cowgirls 5-2 after falling 8-0 in game one.
Dartmouth is now 2-5 on the season, while Oklahoma State is 7-11.
The Big Green surrendered four runs in the first inning as Oklahoma started the evening strong. In the second, freshman Lauren Stone came in to pitch for senior Morgan McCalmon, but the Cowgirls would tack on two more runs as Dartmouth found itself down 6-0 early.
A scoreless third inning gave way to the fourth when Kristin Reasnor hit a solo home run to right center to extend the Oklahoma State advantage to seven runs.
The Big Green tried to find some offense in the top of the fifth when junior Chloe Madill singled through the left field side, but she could not score. In the bottom half of the inning, the Cowgirls tacked on one more run when Vanessa Shippy doubled to left field, which advanced Dre McKee third. McKee scored on a sacrifice fly, to give Oklahoma State an 8-0 lead after five. The game ended in the fifith due to the run-rule.
"Today was a great learning moment for our pitchers on what happens when you allow free bases against a good team," head coach Shannon Doepking said. "OSU is too good of a team for us to give up seven walks. These moments are great for us to go through so early to be able to fix before we get to conference play."
Game two got off to a much better start for Dartmouth. Senior Katie McEachern reached on an error and advanced to second when freshman Taylor Ward was hit by a pitch. With two outs, junior Maddie Damore singled to left field, scoring McEachern to give the Big Green an early 1-0 lead.
McCalmon got the start in game two and pitched out of a one-out jam with runners on second and third. She got Reasnor to strike out swinging before Tiffany Mikkelson flew out to center field.
After a scoreless second, freshman Morgan Martinelli hit her first career home run, a two-run blast to center field to extend Dartmouth's lead to 3-1. She finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
The Cowgirls would not go away quietly. After a leadoff single in the bottom of the sixth, Mikkelson hit an RBI double to left center. Two batters later a Randee O'Donnell single scored Mikkelson to cut the Big Green lead to 3-2. Stone came in to pitch in relief for McCalmon and proceeded to strike out the next two Oklahoma State batters to get out of the inning.
"This was a great rebound for our team to turn the page and get back in the win column versus a very good team," Doepking said. "We truly got to see what it means to be a pitching staff and everyone playing their role and stepping up when their number is called. Offensively we made a nice adjustment and hit a lot of balls hard and put pressure on them. It was also nice to see Morgan Martinelli get her first college home run."
Dartmouth added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh to secure the 5-2 win when Martinelli hit an RBI single up the middle, before Taylor Ward scored on a ground out to third base.
The Big Green return to the diamond tomorrow when they travel to No. 14 Oklahoma for an afternoon doubleheader.
