THIS WEEKEND
The Dartmouth men's lacrosse team will play its first Ivy League contest on home turf this Saturday, hosting Cornell at 1 p.m. on Scully-Fahey Field.
LAST TIME OUT AGAINST VERMONT
The Big Green played their penultimate non-conference contest of the season on Tuesday, falling to Vermont by a score of 15-9 under the lights of Virtue Field. Richie Loftus had a good game, netting four of Dartmouth's nine goals. KC Beard was right behind Loftus with three points from a pair of goals and an assist, while Cam Lee and Wiley Osborne both ended the night with two points apiece. Dartmouth came out aggressively and went on to score the first goal in each of the four quarters. Loftus got the visitors on the board with 12:44 to play in the opening quarter, but a Catamount tally less than 50 seconds later tied things up and one more in the late stages of the first put Vermont on top. Like in the first quarter, just three goals were scored in the second and the Catamounts sported a 4-2 edge heading into halftime. The third and fourth quarters were where the game picked up, as a combined 18 markers were scored during those final 30 minutes. In the fourth, Loftus had a trio of goals in the span of nine minutes, Don Stephan had an unassisted tally with two minutes to go and Beard closed the game, but six Vermont goals during that final quarter gave the win to the Catamounts.
SCOUTING THE BIG RED
Cornell enters this weekend with a 3-4 overall mark and an 0-2 record in Ivy play. The Big Red have had some good wins so far this season, like a 14-10 defeat of No. 17 Virginia and a 6-5 victory over Colgate, but they have had a tough start to conference play. On March 19, Cornell fell to Yale – which is currently ranked No. 1 in the country – by a score of 15-9, and the following weekend, the Red had a 9-6 loss to the Quakers. There is a tie for first on the team; Colton Rupp (15G, 0A) and John Edmonds (8G, 7A) both have 15 points.
LAST TIME AGAINST CORNELL
On March 28, 2015, Dartmouth had its three-game winning streak cut short with an 8-2 loss to No. 7 Cornell on Schoellkopf Field. A goal by the Big Red's John Edmonds 51 seconds into the opening quarter kicked things off, but defense was on point for both teams, as zero goals and a combined 12 shots were taken in the remaining 14 minutes, including ones that hit the post by Lee and Jake Weil. With 11:14 to go in the second, Austin Duncan found the back of the net for his first goal of the season to tie things up following a pass from Phil Hession. Another goal by Edmonds and one by Keith Andrew with 4:19 to play put the home team up by two and the Big Red went into halftime with a 3-1 lead. Cornell doubled its goals by scoring three times within a minute and a half early in the third quarter. Two more by Connor Buczek gave the Red an 8-1 advantage heading into the final quarter. With 45 seconds remaining in the game, Jack Connolly scored his third of the season after connecting with Osborne, netting the only goal of the fourth quarter.
LEADING THE WAY
Osborne remains the only Green player to be in double digits in both goals (16) and assists (10), and also leads Dartmouth in points (26). Austin Meacham is first in ground balls (28) and Stephan leads in faceoffs (67-for-142, .472). In the Ivy League standings, Osborne is third in shots (55) and Blair Friedensohn is third in goals against (61).
BEHIND THE BENCH
Brendan Callahan is in his second season at Dartmouth after being named the 10th head coach in the program's 89-year history in August of 2014. Two new faces join Callahan on the sidelines in 2016: Scott Hackett-Dalgliesh and Brian Small. Hackett-Dalgliesh came to Hanover from UMass Lowell, where he was an assistant coach for the team's first year as a Division I team, while Small served as head coach at John Carroll for the Blue Streaks' first two seasons as a varsity program.
FRESH FACES
Fourteen of the 40 players on the roster will be donning the Green and White uniform for the first time. Making up the Class of 2019 are Cameron Nolting, David Marshall, Harrison Lane, Will Randell, Bo Forsen, Jack Auteri, Meacham, Joe Balaban, Griffin Miller, Matt Tanenblatt, Landon McKenzie, Armin Mortazavi and Tyler Haskell. Also making his Big Green debut is sophomore Steve Satterthwaite, who played one season and red-shirted another at Hofstra. Leading the freshmen so far in 2016 is Randell with his two goals and two assists.
BETWEEN THE PIPES
Balaban played his first full game against Vermont, making a career-high 19 saves and grabbing one ground ball during those 60 minutes. Throughout his first season in net, he has made 34 saves and has a .486 save percentage. Friedensohn has played in seven games, has made 52 saves and has a .460 save percentage. Miller, the Green's other rookie goalkeeper, opened his collegiate career against Denver and had a pair of stops.
