PRINCETON, N.J. – The Dartmouth softball team opened up Ivy League play on Friday with a 12-9 victory in 10 innings over Princeton, but only one game of the scheduled doubleheader could be played before rain washed out game two.
The Big Green are now 12-9, 1-0, while the Tigers drop to 6-18, 0-1. Game two will take place on Sunday at 2 p.m.
In what was a wild contest that saw a combined 21 hits, Dartmouth prevailed when freshman Morgan Martinelli led off the 10th inning with a solo home run for her second long-ball of the season. The Martinelli homer was the first of a big inning for the Big Green in the marathon outing. Junior Karen Chaw tripled to right-center and scored when junior Maddie Damore doubled to center field. Damore crossed home plate on senior Kathy Dzienkowski's double, giving Dartmouth a 12-9 lead.
Damore finished the game 3-for-5 with four RBI's, while six members of the Big Green had multi-hit games. Sophomore Breanna Ethridge earned the win with three innings of work to improve to 4-3, while Claire Klausner took the loss after 4.2 innings with nine earned runs.
Dartmouth had a chance to score early in the first when sophomore Lourlin Lara singled to the shortstop and stole second base. With two outs, she advanced to third on a wild pitch, but the Big Green stranded runners at the corners to end the inning.
Princeton struck first in the second when Danielle Dockx doubled to center field with one out. Later in the inning with two outs, Skye Jerpbak reached base on a dropped pop fly, scoring Dockx in what would become a huge inning for the Tigers. The next batter Marissa Reynolds smacked a triple to right-center, plating two more runs extending Princeton's lead to 3-0.
The Tigers were not finished though as Kaitlyn Waslawski hit an RBI single to center field before the freshman outfielder stole second to get into scoring position. Kayla Bose reached on a throwing error, allowing Waslawski to score giving Princeton a commanding 5-0 lead after two innings.
Dartmouth responded in the third when Martinelli recorded a two RBI single with the bases loaded to cut the Tigers lead to 5-2. With nobody out, the following batter, Chaw doubled down the left field line which plated two more runs for the Big Green. Damore then ripped a triple that sailed over the right fielder's head to tie the game, 5-5.
Dartmouth took the lead when Damore scored as senior Kelsey Miller reached first on an error by the shortstop. The Tigers pulled their starter, bringing in Rachel Wilkinson to pitch for Klausner. The Big Green were able to put more runners in scoring position, but Princeton was able to get out of the inning without any more damage.
In the bottom of the third, the Tigers tied the game when Dockx scored on a Jerpback one-out sacrifice fly. McCalmon struck out the next two batters to retire the side, she finished the day with five strikeouts.
Princeton added two more runs in the fourth when Dockx hit an RBI double to right-center and advanced to third on the throw. A single by Kylee Pierce drove home Dockx as the Tigers took an 8-6 advantage. Dartmouth responded in the top of the fifth when Chloe Madill doubled down the left field line and scored on a Dzienkowski single.
Freshman Lauren Stone came in to pitch for McCalmon in the bottom of the fifth, as Princeton tacked on one more run to go ahead 9-7. The Big Green scored two more runs to tie the game, 9-9 when Damore hit a two-RBI double down the left field line.
With nobody out, Dartmouth loaded the bases in the top of the seventh, but could not score. Sophomore Breanna Ethridge came into pitch for Stone and shut down the Tigers to send the game into extra innings.
The Big Green will travel to Cornell on Saturday for a doubleheader at 12:30 before heading back to New Jersey to wrap up the series with Princeton on Sunday.
