ITHACA, N.Y. – The Dartmouth softball team continued its opening weekend in Ivy League play with two dominant, 12-4 and 16-3 victories over Cornell on Saturday afternoon.
The Big Green are now 14-9, 3-0, while the Big Red drop to 4-16 and 1-3 in Ivy League play.
After playing only one contest on the road at Princeton due to weather, Dartmouth's offense exploded for a combined 28 hits between Saturday's twin bill in the Empire State. Senior Katie McEachern supplied three of these hits, two of which were home run balls.
Senior Morgan McCalmon earned the victory in the circle in game one, which was called in the fifth inning due to the run rule. In the complete game, McCalmon walked two and struck out four to improve to 8-3 on the season. Cornell's Meg Parker took the loss falling to 2-5.
The Big Green struck first when freshman Morgan Martinelli singled up the middle and scored on junior Karen Chaw's double to left-center to take a 1-0 lead after one.
Dartmouth broke the game open in the second with a five-run inning that began with McEachern's lead off single. She scored on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded. Later in the inning, sophomore Lourlin Lara reached first on a fielding error, as senior Kathy Dzienkowski crossed home plate. With the bases loaded and two out, Chaw smacked a double to center field which scored three runs. The Castro Valley, California native went 2-for-4 with four RBIs in game one, followed up by a stellar 2-for-3 performance in game two.
After allowing two lead off singles, McCalmon was able to retire the side before another huge inning for the Big Green. After being hit by a pitch to begin the third, McEachern scored on Dzienkowski's RBI single. A few batters later, senior Kelsey Miller singled to the shortstop with the bases loaded which scored senior Brianna Lohmann. Martinelli capped off the inning with a double down the left field line, which platted two runs and gave Dartmouth a commanding 10-0 advantage.
The Big Red managed to get one run back in the third on an RBI double by Megan Murray, but the Big Green were not finished. McEachern led off the fourth with a solo home run to left field for her fifth of the year. Dartmouth added one more run when Dzienkowski scored on a Lohmann single to take a 12-1 lead.
Cornell scored three more runs in the bottom of the fifth, but it was not enough to overcome the run rule which ended the ballgame.
Game two continued to go the Big Green's way as sophomore Breanna Ethridge tossed a complete game, striking out three batters to improve to 5-3.
In the first inning, Martinelli singled, scoring Lara for the first run of the game. Two batters later junior Maddie Damore singled which plated Miller. With two runners on, McEachern hit her second homerun of the afternoon to pick up three RBIs for her sixth long ball of the season. Dartmouth built on its 5-0 lead in the second with an eight run inning that began with a Lohmann triple to right-center.
Lohman crossed home on a single by Lara as Chaw continued her solid day in Ithaca with a two RBI single. Damore was the next batter and went yard with a three-run homer for her first home run of the year, giving the Big Green an 11-0 lead. Before the inning was over, Dartmouth scored twice to take a 13-0 lead.
After blanking the Big Red in the second, the Big Green continued to keep the pressure on Cornell's pitching staff when Chaw hit a two-run blast to left field for her second home run of the season. The Big Red got on the scoreboard when Rebecca Kubena led off the fourth with a homerun to left field.
Ethridge was able to make it out of the inning, allowing just one more hit in another solid outing for the sophomore right hander. Dartmouth added one more run in the top of the fifth, before Cornell scored twice in its bottom half of the inning. With the Big Green ahead 16-3, the game ended in the fifth due to the run rule.
Dartmouth returns to the diamond tomorrow at Princeton for the second game of a double header that was postponed on Friday due to rain. The first pitch from New Jersey is scheduled for 2 p.m.
