PRINCETON, N.J. – The Dartmouth softball team survived a late rally from Princeton to earn a 5-4 victory in New Jersey on Sunday afternoon.
With the win the Big Green improve to 15-9, 4-0, while the Tigers fall to 7-20, 1-3 in Ivy League play.
Dartmouth sent senior Morgan McCalmon to the circle for the third time this weekend, as the Norman, Oklahoma native pitched six innings, striking out three to improve to 9-3 on the season.
Once again, the Big Green jumped out to an early lead in the first inning when sophomore Lourlin Lara led off the game with a single to the shortstop. She scored three batters later when junior Karen Chaw singled to left-center. Senior Katie McEachern continued her dominant weekend at the plate with a two-out single to left-center, which scored freshman Morgan Martinelli to give Dartmouth the early 2-0 lead.
After a scoreless second inning, the Big Green struck again in the top of the third. Martinelli led off with a single, as Chaw walked and junior Maddie Damore singled to load the bases. Princeton pulled its starting pitcher, Ashley La Guardia, but a McEachern single scored two runs extending Dartmouth's lead to 4-0.
The Tigers responded in their bottom half of the inning on a Marissa Reynolds sacrifice fly to cut the Big Green lead to 4-1.
Dartmouth added an insurance run in the top of the fourth when Chaw singled which scored senior Kelsey Miller from second. A scoreless fifth inning gave way to the sixth when Princeton cut the Big Green's lead to two runs when Keeley Walsh hit a two-run homer to center field.
In the bottom of the seventh, sophomore Breanna Ethridge came in to pitch in relief after Kylee Pierce led off the inning with a solo home run for the Tigers. After allowing a single, Ethridge retired the side to earn her fourth save of the year.
The Big Green return to the diamond next weekend for the 2016 home opener at Dartmouth Softball Park when Dartmouth hosts a double header against Penn on Friday and Columbia on Saturday.
Notes: McEachern stretched her hit streak to 12 games which is the longest streak of the season for the San Diego, California native. Chaw is also on six game hitting streak after a successful opening weekend in Ivy League play. Sunday's contest was a makeup game for Friday's second game of a doubleheader which was rained out.
