HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth softball team defeated Yale 4-0, before falling 4-2 in the opening games of a four-game series in Hanover on Saturday afternoon.
The Big Green are now 25-11, 13-1 in the Ivy League, while the Bulldogs are 14-27-1, 6-8 in conference play.
The loss in game two was Dartmouth's first loss in Ivy League play this season, before that the Big Green extended their win streak to six games after senior Morgan McCalmon pitched a gem lasting all seven innings. McCalmon threw her first one-hitter of the season when a base hit broke up her chance for the no hitter in the top of the seventh. The Norman, Oklahoma native struck out six batters to improve to 15-3, tying Kristen Rumley's 15-win season from a year ago.
After a scoreless first inning, Dartmouth struck first in the bottom of the second when junior Maddie Damore hit a two run blast to left field after senior Katie McEachern's lead off single. Damore's second long ball of the year gave her team the early 2-0 lead.
The Big Green added two more runs in the fifth after three Yale errors. Sophomores Tiffany Dyson and Lourlin Lara both reached base on back-to-back errors, as Dyson crossed home on senior Kelsey Miller's groundout to the shortstop. The next batter was McEachern who made it to first on an error by the center fielder, which scored Lara, giving Dartmouth the 4-0 lead.
McCalmon continued to pitch well for the rest of her outing getting the final two batters to fly out and ground out to end the ball game.
In Game 2, the Big Green sent sophomore Breanna Ethridge to the circle, where she pitched six innings and gave up three runs to fall to 9-4 on the year.
This season Dartmouth has scored first in the majority of its conference games, but this time the Bulldogs got on the scoreboard first when Allison Skinner hit a two out, solo home run to left field to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Yale would extend its advantage in the second when Sydney Glover doubled to left which scored Lauren Delgadillo, who reached base on a fielder's choice.
Ahead 2-0, the Bulldogs tacked on another run in the top of the third when Skinner hit her second homer of the afternoon, this time a solo shot to left-center, as the visitors took a 3-0 lead.
After a scoreless fourth, the Big Green responded in the top of the fifth. Damore led off with a walk, which set up freshman Kassidy Williams up for a two-run home run to left field for her second career homer. Dartmouth tried to keep the rally going when Dyson smacked a double down the left field line, but the Big Green could not score the tying run.
Each team stranded a runner on base in the sixth, as McCalmon came in to pitch in relief for Ethridge. With one out, Yale got an insurance run when Rachel Paris homered to center field, giving the Bulldogs a 4-2 lead.
Dartmouth had one last chance in the bottom of the seventh, but the Big Green were retired in order to end the game.
Both teams will return to Dartmouth Softball Park tomorrow to conclude the series with a double header at 12:30 p.m.
