HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth softball team continued its dominance in conference play with a 7-0 victory over Columbia, followed by a 12-2 win over the Lions in five innings.
The Big Green are now 19-9, 8-0 in the Ivy League, while Columbia drops to 7-24, 2-6.
With the weekend sweep, Dartmouth is the only undefeated team in the conference after the Big Green extended their winning streak to nine games. Once again junior Karen Chaw had a strong showing at the plate for Dartmouth with four hits between the two games. Senior Katie McEachern had a huge day in Game 2 with a two-run homer and three-run homer for her eight and ninth long balls of the year.
In Game 1, the Big Green sent their ace to the circle, as senior Morgan McCalmon earned her 11th victory, giving up just two hits, with five strikeouts in six innings of work. Dartmouth got on the scoreboard early in the bottom of the first when junior Maddie Damore hit a three RBI double to left field with the bases loaded, giving the home team a 3-0 lead.
The game remained a pitchers duel until the Big Green broke the contest open in the bottom of the fifth. Senior Kelsey Miller reached on an error and scored on freshman Morgan Martinelli's double. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Martinelli crossed home plate on an RBI single by Damore. The next batter, senior Kathy Dzienkowski hit an infield fly to the shortstop which scored McEachern all the way from second base.
McCalmon retired three batters in the sixth before Dartmouth tacked on an insurance run in its bottom half of the inning when Miller advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on a throwing error. Freshman Lauren Stone came in to pitch in relief to get the final three outs and secure the victory for the Big Green.
Much like yesterday's second game against Penn, Dartmouth's bats exploded with another big inning, scoring seven runs. Sophomore Breanna Ethridge got the start, where she allowed just two hits, four walks and fanned five Lions' batters to improve to 6-3.
After a scoreless first, the Big Green once again struck first with three runs in the second. McEachern led off the inning with a triple to right field and scored on junior Chloe Madill's single to left. Later in the inning, sophomore Lourlin Lara smacked a double to left to score two more runs, which gave Dartmouth a 3-0 lead.
Columbia responded in the top of the third when Maddie Gott hit a two-run blast to left-center to come within one run of the lead.
The Big Green did not have to wait long to get the two runs back, when McEachern hit a two-run home run over the center field wall to give Dartmouth a 5-2 lead.
The Big Green broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth, after Miller hit a two-out double to center field which scored Lara. Martinelli followed up with a double to left-center which plated another run, as Chaw walked which set up McEachern on deck. The San Diego California, native hit her second homer of the game, this time a three-run blast to center field.
Tessa Kroll came into pitch for the Lions, but Dartmouth was not finished after Kroll gave up back-to-back singles and a walk to load the basses. Sophomore Tiffany Dyson hit a double to center field which scored two more runs before Columbia got the elusive third out.
Stone came into pitch the top of the fifth, recording the final three outs after allowing two base hits. The game ended in the fifth due to the run rule, which is fourth victory in five innings the Big Green have earned this season.
Dartmouth returns to the diamond this Tuesday for its final non-conference game of the regular season when the Big Green host UMass Lowell for a doubleheader at 3:30 p.m.
