DERBY, Conn. – No. 11 Dartmouth heavyweight rowing competed against No. 1 Yale on Saturday. The conditions were good, with light tailwinds for the first three races before switching to a decent headwind for the final varsity 8+ race.
“I thought our boats, top to bottom, did a nice job of getting off the line aggressively and putting themselves in the races against one of the best teams in the country,” head coach Wyatt Allen said. “In the end, we ran into better crews today.
“I like our depth and the way our guys have been pushing each other for their seats each week,” Allen continued. “I'm confident we can find more speed across the board in the next couple of weeks.”
The day got started with the fourth varsity, and Dartmouth (6:03.28) finished seven seconds behind Yale (5:56.3). The third varsity showcases the closest race of the day, in which the Big Green (5:49.3) came in just four seconds behind the Bulldogs (5:45.35) after being neck and neck at the beginning.
By the time the last two boats were lining up to race, the headwind had picked up and broke against the backs of the oarsmen. Dartmouth's second varsity finished in 5:54.3, with Yale completing the course just ahead with a time of 5:49.2.
Yale's varsity eighth retained the Olympic Axe by winning the final race of the day. The Bulldogs finished in 5:46.8 and were followed by the Green (5:57.64).
Next Saturday, April 16, Dartmouth will face Boston University and Rutgers on the Connecticut River.
