SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Dartmouth sailing team advanced to the final round of the ICSA Sperry Women's National Championship after taking sixth at the Western Semifinals at the San Diego Yacht Club on Wednesday.
The 36-team field was narrowed to 18 teams as the top nine finishers from the Eastern Semifinals will compete against the top nine finishers from the Western Semifinals to determine the winner of the Gerald C. Miller Trophy. The Big Green have won two of the last three Women's Championships with its last coming in 2014.
Finishing with 179 points, the Big Green won a head-to-head tie breaker with Wisconsin for sixth. Meanwhile, the Coast Guard Academy held onto the top spot with 84 points, as Ivy League foes Yale and Brown finished second and third. The University of California Santa Barbara took fourth with 155 points, while the College of Charleston rounded out the top five with 177.
In the Eastern races, the University of Rhode Island took first, maintaining its lead from day one of the regatta. Boston University took second after winning a tiebreaker with Vermont, who slipped to third.
Racing began on Wednesday morning with winds out of the west at eight knots before an afternoon sea breeze picked up to 15-17 knots. In Division A, Dartmouth picked up five top five finishes including one victory and four top five finishes in Division B.
The Big Green return to the water this morning at 10:30 a.m. for Day 1 of the championship regatta, which will conclude on Friday where the champion will be named.
