SAN DIEGO, Calif. – After one round at the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association Sperry Women's National Championship at the San Diego Yacht Club, the Dartmouth sailing team sits in ninth place.
The Big Green tallied 191 points, just three points behind Twin State rival Vermont in eighth with 188. The Coast Guard Academy sits atop the leaderboard with 94 points after a strong showing in the semifinal races. Ivy League foe Brown is currently second with 128 points and Boston University is third with 142, as MIT and the College of Charleston round out the top five.
After finishing sixth in the Western Semifinals, Dartmouth qualified for the finals, where the Big Green turned in seven top-five finishes in Division A on Thursday afternoon, including a second- and third-place finish. In the B Division, Dartmouth recorded one top-five finish, coming in fourth in the second race of the day.
"Day one started shifty and a little tricky, but the sea breeze filled later in the day and conditions became more like what we've seen the past few days," head coach Justin Assad said. "Sarah and Sophie were in tune in A division, and our B division is sailing well but a few mental and execution errors have held us back."
"For day two, we will try to adjust our starting to be able to punch the line with a solid lane, that has been the key to success," Assad added. "Our women have worked very hard and are excited to get back out there. They know today is a chance to get better, and we plan to stay focused on the process for day two."
The Big Green return to the water tomorrow afternoon for the final day of the Women's National Championship where the winner will claim the Gerald C. Miller Trophy.
