HANOVER, N.H. – Charlotte Esty scored her third goal of the season on Sunday afternoon to propel the Dartmouth women's soccer team past Fairleigh Dickinson, 1-0, at Burnham Field.
With the victory the Big Green are now 4-2-0, while the Knights fall to 1-5-0.
“It was kind of a guts and glory day,” Dartmouth head coach Ron Rainey said. “I'm proud of how we came out in the second half of the game. I'm also proud of how we defended in the first half and how we played in the attack to create good scoring chances.”
The first half of the match got off to a slow start as each squad combined for just three shots. Fairleigh Dickinson had the first scoring chance of the game 10 minutes in, but Dartmouth's senior goalkeeper, Casey Cousineau came out to make the save.
With 26 minutes remaining in the half, the Big Green were awarded a free-kick as Holly Patterson fired a shot in the box, but could not connect with a teammate.
Dartmouth nearly broke the scoreless stalemate with just under 10 minutes before the halftime break. Freshman Hayley Soriano took a corner kick for the Big Green, connecting with Hayley Snyder in the box, but Snyder's shot went high.
After halftime the team's returned to the field, where Fairleigh Dickinson had its best scoring chance of the game. The Knight's took a hard shot in the 54th minute near the top of the box, forcing Cousineau to make a diving stop.
Dartmouth scored the eventual game winner in the 59th minute when Remy Borinsky crossed a pass from the far right corner over to Esty who buried a shot to the left of the keeper.
“Charlotte works really hard out in the field,” Rainey said. “You want somebody with a short memory on the missed shots, but to keep getting those chances. We're glad that we have her here and we're glad she's scored some goals for us this season.”
The Big Green continued to play tough on defense throughout the rest of the game, holding Fairleigh Dickinson to just five shots in 90 minutes of action. Cousineau remained solid in goal, finishing the afternoon with three saves.
Dartmouth returns to Burnham Field this Friday, when the Big Green host Albany at 7 p.m. The game can be seen live on the Ivy League Digital Network for subscribers with Dave Collins on the call.
