HANOVER, N.H. – Behind a dominant offensive performance, the Dartmouth women's soccer team defeated Albany, 3-1, on Friday night at Burnham Field.
With the victory, the Big Green are now 5-2-0, while the Great Danes drop to 3-6-0.
Dartmouth came to its home field ready to play, dominating the first half of the contest, as the Big Green only allowed two shots in the first stanza and outshot their opponents 15-3 through 90 minutes of play. Dartmouth captain, Holly Patterson, had the first solid scoring opportunity on a header in the box that was saved in the early going.
In the 19th minute, the Big Green nearly scored on a shot from Zoe Enright, who curved the ball from right to left and nearly beat the keeper to the far post.
Throughout the first half Dartmouth remained disciplined despite having a ton of green field to work with. The game clock ticked down to less than 10 minutes to play when Big Green head coach Ron Rainey made a substitution. One of the players who came into the game at that time was Bianca Ribi.
Early in the 41st minute, Ribi took a bad angle shot that bounced off the far goal post and into the net for her first goal of the season, putting her team ahead, 1-0.
“We moved the ball really well and played simple in the first half,” Rainey said. “Offensively it led to a ton of possessions and some nice chances.”
After the halftime break, Dartmouth picked up right where it left off in the second half with two goals in four minutes. Junior Brittany Champagne scored her first tally of the season in the 45th minute when she fired a shot that sailed just over the keepers' head and found the back of the net.
The Big Green kept the pressure on the Great Danes, scoring their third goal of the contest in the 50th minute. Charlotte Esty passed the ball over to Patterson near midfield. Patterson found Remy Borinsky from about 18 yards out, as Borinsky buried a shot in the bottom left corner of the goal.
Dartmouth continued to play lockdown defense throughout the second half, especially when Albany started to find some rhythm late in the game. In the 81st minute, the Great Danes got on the scoreboard with a goal from Caroline Kopp who scored on a rebound to bring her team within two scores.
The late goal by Albany was not enough, as the Big Green kept their composure and secured the victory in front of their home crowd. Dartmouth's senior goalkeeper, Casey Cousineau needed to make just one save to earn her fifth victory of the season, as she has only allowed three goals in seven games.
The Big Green return to action on Sept. 20 when Dartmouth travels to twin state rival Vermont at 7 p.m.
