Dartmouth Opens Fall at Tribe Invitational

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Dartmouth women's tennis opened the 2016-17 season at the 24th annual Tribe Invitational at William & Mary on Friday. The Big Green faced off against Maryland, West Virginia and the host.

'We bounced back in singles and played without fear,” head coach Bob Dallis said. “It was great that the three members of the Class of 2020 were able to come back from a first-set loss to win their matches.”

Four of the Green's six singles matches against the Mountaineers went to three sets and ended up going 6-1 overall. Senior co-captain Taylor Ng dropped her first set to Habiba Shaker (6-4) before taking the remaining two sets (6-2, 6-3). Sophomore Allison Chuang defeated Christina Jordan in three, falling in the first set (6-1) before going 7-6(4), 7-5 in the next two, while freshman Racquel Lyn fell in her first set to Paula Goetz (6-3), coming back to take the next two (6-3, 6-2) to win the match.

Freshman Chuyang Guan took down Kaja Mrgole in two quick sets (6-4, 6-4) and classmate Allison McCann defeated Carolina Lewis, dropping the first set by a score of 7-6(5) before taking the remaining two close sets, 7-5, 7-6(0).

Some of the Big Green's doubles matches were very close and could have gone in either direction. Against the Tribe, Chuang and junior Shannon Mukerji narrowly fell to Maria Groener and Charlotte Madson, 8-6. In the match against Maryland, Chuang and Guan fell to Kristina Yemelyanenka Saya Usui by the same score.

Dartmouth will return to action on Saturday with a doubles match against Penn at 9:30 a.m. and a singles match versus Liberty at 3 p.m.
