PRINCETON, N.J. – The Dartmouth field hockey team was dealt a 4-0 loss Saturday at the hands of 13th-ranked Princeton in the Ivy League opener for both.
The Tigers (3-3, 1-0) gave the Big Green (3-4, 0-1) a taste of their own medicine after Dartmouth posted a 3-0 shutout of Sacred Heart last Sunday in its most recent outing.
From the opening whistle until the final horn of the scoreboard, Saturday's Ivy opener belonged to the 11-time defending conference champs. Princeton out-attempted the visitors from Hanover, 33-2, and finished with a 19-2 edge in shots on goal.
Despite giving up the four tallies, the bright spot on the afternoon was the play of freshman goalkeeper Emma Plumb who turned in a career day with 15 saves. Her performance in goal prevented the score from becoming even further in favor of the Tigers.
Cat Caro scored a pair of goals in the win and now leads Princeton this season with five. The Tigers also got scores from Jane Donino-Enscoe and Nicole Catalino.
"Although we are not happy with the final result today, we have several positives to take away," head coach Amy Fowler said. "The stats show one side of a hard fought battle against a top-15 team. Emma (Plumb) had a very good game for us. We knew we would get some chances, but Princeton's defense was stingy. We simply needed to be better with our collective team attack, and we know we can be!"
Dartmouth returns home to take on Brown next Saturday, October 1 at Chase AstroTurf Field. Game time between the Big Green and Bears is set for noon.
