THIS WEEKEND
After playing a game at Harvard on Tuesday, the Dartmouth women's hockey team is getting right back to it this weekend by taking on Yale and Brown, meeting the two teams for the first time this season. After Saturday's game, the Big Green will have played six games in the last 11 days.
LAST TIME OUT
A goal scored halfway through the second period broke the tie and lifted Harvard to a 2-1 victory over Dartmouth at the Bright-Landry Hockey Center on Tuesday evening.
Eleni Tebano scored the Big Green's goal five minutes into the first period. Alyssa Baker and Emma Korbs also ended the night with a point by assisting on the tally. In net, Christie Honor had 29 saves.
Harvard broke through early, getting on the board 2:26 into the first period. The Crimson only got to the enjoy that one-goal lead for a little over two minutes, as Tebano's fourth tally of the season – a wrister to the left of Brianna Laing in net – at 5:01 tied the score. That was Baker's fifth assist in the last five games, while Korbs picked up her first point of the second half of the season.
Honor had two big saves to start the second to keep the game tied at one-all for the time being. She was not so lucky at 10:51 when Kaitlin Tse gave the lead back to Harvard with her power-play goal, which was scored with just 15 second remaining with the extra player.
A minute into the third, Tess Bracken – who had had a number of chances in the second period – fired from the point, but Laing went into a split to catch the puck and make the save. With under a minute to play, the puck, which was behind Harvard's net, flipped over the crossbar and landed just off the goal line. The Big Green tried to knock it in, but Laing was able to recover the puck and keep the game from going to overtime.
Harvard had a 31-25 shot advantage and went 1-for-3 on the power play while holding Dartmouth to 0-for-2.
SCOUTING YALE
The Bulldogs enter the weekend with an overall record of 5-11-3 and 3-8-1 in ECAC Hockey action. Yale is currently on a three-game losing streak, falling to RPI (2-1 OT), Clarkson (4-2) and St. Lawrence (4-1). Phoebe Staenz leads the Bulldogs in goals (11), Eden Murray is first in assists (17), and Murray and Krista Yip-Chuck are tied for the team-lead in points (22).
LAST TIME AGAINST THE BULLDOGS
On Feb. 5, 2016, Dartmouth fell to Yale, 4-3, in overtime.
Yale got things started at 5:52 in the first when Hanna Astrom tripped in front of the net and managed to flick the puck into the left corner. That lead would be short-lived, as Dartmouth countered in dramatic fashion. At 12:06, Ailish Forfar and Kate Landers took a couple of shots, causing goaltender Hanna Mandl to fall over. While the goalie was desperately trying to keep the puck out of the net and the rest of the Big Green were trying to get the puck in the net, Hailey Noronha pocketed her second goal in the past two games, a power-play tally. The Bulldogs got one more at 19:42 to take a 2-1 lead into the intermission.
At 19:42, Yale gave itself a two-goal lead but, again, that would not last long. Kennedy Ottenbreit won the faceoff and sent the puck to Laura Stacey, who had a couple of quick passes with Tebano before the latter fired from the blueline, ricocheting off the crossbar before falling in for her first marker of the season and Dartmouth's second man-up goal of the night.
Trailing, 3-2, Forfar picked up a loose puck on the right side, circled round to the left and fired over Mandl's head at 1:35 in the third, tying the game at three-all. Lindsey Allen had a good chance at a shorthanded goal some time later, but Mandl got in the way. Still tied, the game went to overtime. At 3:17 in overtime, Yale's one shot paid off, going over Robyn Chemago's right shoulder to end the game.
SCOUTING BROWN
Before facing the Crimson on Friday, the Bears had a record of 4-15-0 and 2-10-0 in conference play. Brown dropped all of its ECAC Hockey games except for the ones against Union, defeating the Dutchwomen, 3-1, in November and again by a score of 4-3 a few weeks ago. Sam Donovan leads the team with seven goals, Sena Hanson has eight assists, and both Donovan and Hanson share the team-lead with 11 points.
LAST TIME AGAINST THE BEARS
On Feb. 6, 2016, Dartmouth closed out its home slate in dramatic fashion with a 5-0 win over Brown on Senior Day.
Forfar and Noronha led the charge with three points apiece. Forfar had one goal and two assists and Noronha assisted on the last three tallies. Four other Big Green players ended the game with a point.
An own goal opened scoring for Dartmouth at 3:24 in the first period. Ottenbreit passed to Allen for an open look at the net. After Brown netminder Julianne Landry made an initial save, the Bears failed to clear the puck from danger, knocking it into their own net, much to the shock of Landry.
Even though the Green sported a 16-5 shot advantage in the first period, the start of the second was a little quieter, as it took almost four minutes for either team to take a shot due to the back-and-forth nature of the game.
At 12:59, a mere eight seconds after Brown was called for a penalty, Ottenbreit picked up her own rebound after a cross from Tebano and shot to the left. The puck tipped off Landry's glove and fell into the net to give Dartmouth a 2-0 lead.
The Big Green got their third of the game at 7:24 of the third when Forfar won the faceoff and sent it to Stacey, who shot from the top of the left circle. Landry caught the puck in midair but lost her grip a split second later and watched as the puck slid in behind her. Stacey added a shorthanded empty netter at 17:37 and, with just three seconds remaining, Forfar snuck one in the right side of the net to end the game, causing the Thompson Arena fans to go wild.
AND IN NET…
Honor appeared between the pipes in the game against Harvard. She made 29 saves while allowing two goals and had a .935 save percentage and 2.00 goals against average. In five games this season, she has played 292 minutes, has allowed 13 goals while allowing 139 saves, and has a .914 save percentage and 2.67 goals against average. Chemago has appeared in 14 games, has allowed 34 goals while making 435 saves, and has a .922 save percentage and 2.60 goals against average. Dartmouth's other goaltender, Shannon Ropp, has not appeared in a regular-season game, but had a strong performance in the exhibition contest against McGill.
