Big Green Win First Match of 2017 Against Bulldogs

HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth men's tennis opened the 2017 portion of its season against Bryant on Friday evening, defeating the Bulldogs, 6-1, at the Boss Tennis Center.

“First of all, Bryant played hard and played well, as we expected them to,” head coach Chris Drake said. “They made things uncomfortable for us with their level and their tenaciousness. Our guys responded by playing some good tennis at the end of some very close sets and matches. We learn things from every match we play — both individually and collectively. We will be ready to battle against a very good Indiana team tomorrow.”

The Big Green kicked things off by sweeping all three doubles matches to win the first point. At No. 3, Charlie Broom and Ciro Riccardi had a 6-2 victory over Jorge Isaias Ortiz-Garcia and Josh Kliger, while a 6-1 win by Max Fliegner and George Wall at the No. 2 position clinched the doubles point. Roko Glasnovic and Diego Pedraza added one more win at No. 1 to send Dartmouth to singles on the right foot.

All it took were three straight singles wins to shut the match down. The first to finish was Paul Midgley at the No. 6 spot, defeating Oliver Welsh, 6-1, 6-2. At No. 4, Broom added his second victory of the day with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Artur Jakubowski, while Fliegner clinched with a slightly closer 6-2, 7-6(3) defeat of Kliger at the No. 2 position. Riccardi and Wall also defeated their opponents.

Dartmouth is right back at it on Saturday, hosting Indiana at 5 p.m.
