THIS WEEKEND
Having played all three of its games on the road last week, the Dartmouth women's hockey team will return to Thompson Arena for four in a row, starting with No. 8/8 Cornell and Colgate this Friday and Saturday.
LAST TIME OUT
On its second to last road trip of the 2016-17 season, the Big Green fell to Yale (3-0) and Brown (1-0).
Dartmouth at Yale
Versus Yale on Friday, Tess Bracken led the charge with her five shots on goal, while Cecilia Lopez had three. In net, Robyn Chemago made 29 saves and had a .935 save percentage.
Halfway through the first period, Morgan Turner had a quick break, but her shot was saved by Kyra O'Brien. The Big Green player picked up her own rebound and tried to send it into the right corner, but the Yale goalie was there to get that one too. It looked as if neither team would get on the board in the first until Mallory Souliotis broke the scoreless tie with her shot from the left point that flew over Chemago's extended glove with 11.9 seconds remaining on the clock.
After a quiet second period, Emma Korbs gave the Big Green their best chance at a goal in the third when her shot, that was saved by Yale's netminder, bounced out of her glove, but the Bulldog defense managed to clear the puck. At 7:48 of the third, the home team made it a 2-0 game, with the tally being credited to Julia Yetman. An empty netter at 19:19 by Jordan Chancellor ended the game.
Dartmouth at Brown
The following afternoon in Providence, Mackenzie St. Onge, Kennedy Ottenbreit and Kate Landers led the team with three shots apiece.
Brown took control of the first period, outshooting Dartmouth, 14-3, and testing Chemago on multiple occasions. At 14:43, less than 20 seconds after the Big Green's second penalty was completed, the Bears' Sarah Migliori collected her own rebound and found the back of the net, scoring the game winner and giving the home team a one-goal lead.
Dartmouth returned in the second period a more aggressive team, taking more quality shots. Lopez had her shot saved by Monica Elvin, but the Brown goalie dropped the puck in the crease. The Big Green rookie tried her luck at finding the back of the net, but Elvin beat her to it. During a particularly busy three-minute span at the end that saw four Brown shots, two by Sam Donovan proved dangerous: one hit the post and another was reviewed to see if it passed the goal line, but it was ruled no good and the score remained 1-0.
Halfway through the third, Alyssa Baker shot from a tough angle, but the puck would have gone in had Elvin not been there to grab it out of the air. With 15 seconds remaining on the power play and less than four minutes to go in the third, Landers hit the pipe, giving Dartmouth its best opportunity of the period.
SCOUTING CORNELL
The Big Red are having a good season so far and enter the weekend in third place in the conference with an overall record of 13-6-2 and a 9-3-2 mark in ECAC Hockey play. Cornell was on a six-game unbeaten streak, but a 5-2 loss to St. Lawrence over the weekend cut that short. Kirstin O'Neill leads the team in goals (12), while Hanna Bunton leads in assists (12) and points (19).
LAST TIME AGAINST THE BIG RED
Back on Dec. 3, Dartmouth dropped a 2-1 decision to Cornell at Lynah Rink. Ottenbreit scored with 40 seconds remaining in the third period to cut the Big Red's lead to one, but time elapsed before the Big Green could find the back of the net again.
Bracken, who had been testing Cornell's goaltender all day, ended up with the first assist, while Eleni Tebano picked up the second. Chemago had a good game, ending up with 31 saves.
SCOUTING COLGATE
Before their game against Harvard on Friday night, the Raiders had an overall record of 16-7-3 and 7-6-1 in conference play. A four-game unbeaten streak in November turned into a five-game winless streak that was ended with a 4-3 victory over St. Lawrence over this weekend. The following day, Colgate fell to Clarkson, 2-1.
LAST TIME AGAINST THE RAIDERS
On Dec. 2, after trailing by two halfway through the second, Dartmouth made it a one-goal game, but was unable to get a second, falling to No. 7/7 Colgate at the Class of 1965 Arena. Caroline Shaunessy scored her first goal of the season, with assists going to Baker and Devon Moir. That was Moir's first point since the 2014-15 season. Chemago stopped 29 shots in the loss.
100 GAMES AND COUNTING
Moir will play in her 100th career game against Cornell on Friday, becoming the fifth Big Green senior to reach that milestone this season.
AND IN NET…
Chemago appeared in net for the entirety of both games this weekend, making 29 saves against Yale and 30 the next day against Brown. So far this season, she has played 902 minutes, has made 460 saves and allowed 37 goals, has a .926 save percentage and 2.46 goals against average. In five games this season, Christie Honor has played 292 minutes, has allowed 13 goals while allowing 139 saves, and has a .914 save percentage and 2.67 goals against average. Dartmouth's other goaltender, Shannon Ropp, has not appeared in a regular-season game, but had a strong performance in the exhibition contest against McGill.
