PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Four goals and three saves were the recipe for success in the Dartmouth men's soccer team's 4-0 win over Penn on Saturday night.
Led by senior Eduvie Ikoba, who scored two goals, the Dartmouth attacking offense, paired with strong defense and keeper Christopher Palacios who had three saves, was able to notch on another conference win.
“I am certainly very proud of the group,” said head coach Chad Riley. “They competed well against a very good Penn team. Every Ivy League game is a battle and I am proud of how our team responded to the challenge Penn posed.”
Ikoba struck early in the fifth minute of play, scoring on a shot inside the box on a pass from freshman Dawson McCartney. That was the only goal of the first half as neither team scored again in the first period.
In the 57th minute, senior Tyler Dowse received a pass from sophomore Henry Balwdin and dribbled to the net, pulling out the Penn keeper and passing defenders. The keeper and a defender had to avoid each other giving Dowse plenty of room and an open net, where he scored the second goal of the game.
McCartney found himself in position to score with only eight minutes left in the game, sending the ball between a defender's legs and across the line into the net. The Voorhees, N.J. native extended the lead and also scored his first collegiate goal in the 81st minute.
Two minutes later, junior Justin Donawa lined up for a corner kick and placed the ball right in Ikoba's range, who headed it into the net scoring the fourth goal.
The Quakers outshot the Big Green 9-4 but were unable to get any past Palacios and some were very close outside the posts. With the win, Dartmouth improves to 8-2-1 on the season with an Ivy League record of 2-0-1, while Penn falls to 2-8-1 and 0-2-1 in conference play.
