THIS WEEKEND
After playing two preseason games this past weekend, the Dartmouth women's hockey team will officially kick off the 2017-18 season with a two-game road weekend, facing ECAC Hockey and Ivy League rival Harvard on Friday and New Hampshire in a non-conference tilt two days later. The game against the Crimson will be on NESNPlus, while the game in Durham will be on ESPN3.
LAST TIME OUT
The Big Green went 1-1 in preseason games last week, defeating Holy Cross, 3-2, in overtime on Friday before falling to McGill in the teams' annual exhibition game by a score of 7-2 on Sunday.
Against the Crusaders, Cecilia Lopez scored a pair of goals, including the overtime winner just 37 seconds into the extra frame. Christina Rombaut scored Dartmouth's other goal.
On Sunday, Morgan Turner, Kate Landers and Jennifer Costa teamed up for both the Green's goals in the loss. Christine Honor and Shannon Ropp both saw playing time between the pipes. Honor was in net for the first 28 minutes and had 10 saves, while Ropp played out the remainder of the game and recorded a career-high 23 stops.
SCOUTING THE CRIMSON
Both Dartmouth and Harvard will be opening their seasons on Friday. This past weekend, the Crimson faced McGill in an exhibition game, defeating the Martlets by a score of 6-1.
LAST TIME AGAINST HARVARD
The Big Green dropped both of its game to their conference foe last season. On Jan. 17, a goal scored halfway through the second period broke the tie and lifted Harvard to a 2-1 victory over Dartmouth at the Bright-Landry Hockey Center. Eleni Tebano scored the Green's goal five minutes into the first period.
SCOUTING THE WILDCATS
UNH has had a good start to their season and enter the weekend undefeated following wins against Merrimack (3-1) and Holy Cross (9-1) and a tie against Merrimack (1-1). The Wildcats will have another game under their belts by the time the Big Green arrive in Durham, having played Vermont on Friday.
LAST TIME AGAINST UNH
On Jan. 10, the Big Green scored twice in the first period and held on to the lead throughout the remainder of the game to defeat the Wildcats, 3-1, at Thompson Arena. Fight different players ended the night with a point apiece. Mackenzie St. Onge scored her first goal of the season, while Lopez netted her first collegiate tally. Kennedy Ottenbreit, Landers and Tess Bracken earned assists. Honor had a great game, making 31 saves in 60 minutes while allowing just one goal to get her first win of her career.
BEHIND THE BENCH
While head coach Laura Schuler is coaching the Canadian Olympic Team in preparation for the 2018 Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, former St. Lawrence men's hockey head coach Joe Marsh has stepped in as the Big Green's interim coach. He is assisted by Chris Cobb in his second season and 2015 graduate Morgan Illikainen in her first year behind the Green bench.
AND IN NET
Two of the Green's three netminders from last season are returning in 2017-18. As a sophomore last year, Christine Honor appeared in six games, making a career-high 152 saves while allowing 14 goals. She also had a career-high .916 save percentage and 2.60 goals against average. She ended the season with a record of 1-4-0 after picking up her first collegiate win in the 2-1 victory over UNH in January.
Shannon Ropp did not see any playing time last season, but is already making an impact in preseason games this season. Against Holy Cross, she played the final 20 minutes and made seven saves. In the game against McGill on Sunday, she made a career-high 23 stops in just over 30 minutes.
CLASS OF 2021
Donning a green and white uniform for the first time are rookies Jennifer Costa, Megan Cornell, Taylor Matherson, Emily McLaughlin, Linda Essery, Katerina Dajia and Kayla Wormsbecher. The group is a perfect mixture of three forwards (Costa, McLaughlin, Essery), three defensemen (Cornell, Matherson, Dajia) and one goalie (Wormsbecher).
