HANOVER, N.H. – Sunday capped the four-game homestand to open the Dartmouth women's basketball season, and the home team ended the weekend with an 81-50 win over New Jersey Institute of Technology.
Junior Isalys Quiñones led the way with 18 points and 11 rebounds, her second double-double of the season. This win improves the Big Green to 4-0, which has not happened since the opening of the 2014-15 season, while NJIT falls to 0-6.
“To start the game offensively we had some really good looks,” said head coach Belle Koclanes. “The ball wasn't going in the basket early, but we were getting the looks we want. We turned up the defense and that generated some offense for us and we were able to build, which is what we want to do, we want to play fast, score early, and build those leads.”
Dartmouth got off to a slow start in the first quarter, but in the last three minutes completed a 15-0 run to take the lead ending the quarter up 24-8. The first six minutes of the game were defined by a handful of turnovers and missed shots, but the home team was able to get its rhythm back and take the big lead.
In the second quarter, the Big Green only allowed the Highlanders to score nine points, and extended the lead with at trio of three-pointers from senior Kate Letkewicz, who ended with 16 points. The teams headed into halftime with a Dartmouth 46-17 lead.
“We have to play better in the second half, all four games our second half effort has dipped a little bit, and that has to change for us to continue to compete at the level that we want to,” Koclanes said. “Lessons that we are continuing to learn and work on are that we have to take care of the basketball and make better decisions on offense, which will then help our defense, and rebound consistently as well.”
Opening the third quarter with a significant advantage, seniors Emily Slagle and Andi Norman hit back-to-back threes, taking the score to 52-17, the highest lead of the game up 35 points. While NJIT was down, the road team was capitalizing on opportunities and a handful of turnovers turned into the Highlanders scoring buckets. In the third there were seven Big Green turnovers, which NJIT converted into seven points.
Starting the last 10 minutes of play, NJIT's Tatianna Torress hit a jumper 20 seconds in, before the home team turned it back on, jumping out to a 24-point lead with less than four minutes left to play. Junior Cy Lippold drained a three in the last 90 seconds of play, before Quiñones followed with a trey of her own and sophomore Paula Lenart topped it off with a layup in the last eight seconds.
This is the fourth straight game with at least three players scoring in double digits. Quiñones and Letkewicz joined Lippold who scored 12 points and Slagle who had 10. The Big Green shot above 50 percent in all categories, 52.5 percent from the floor, 55 from three and 54.5 from the free throw line.
Dartmouth will hit the road for its first pair of away games this week, traveling to West Point, N.Y. to take on Army West Point on Wednesday at 7 p.m. and then heading to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. to face Marist on Saturday at 7 p.m.
“We're excited, I love going on the road with our team especially this time of year, when school is out, finals are over, fall term is complete and we have them to ourselves now,” Koclanes said on the first road trip ahead. “Team road trips are really important for building relationships and rapport, so I'm really excited for this first trip.”
