MIDDLEBURY, Vt. — The Dartmouth ski team won all four events on the final day of the Middlebury Carnival to pull away from the field for a convincing win with 1,027 points, more than 200 ahead of second-place Vermont (816). The Big Green have now won four of the five Eastern Intercollegiate Skiing Association carnivals this winter heading into the NCAA Regionals next weekend.
The men's alpine team produced three of the top four finishers in the giant slalom at the Snow Bowl with junior
Brian McLaughlin taking home the gold in 2:01.38, edging out Middlebury's Robert Cone by a tenth of a second. McLaughlin owned the fastest time on the initial run in 59.11 seconds with seniors
Dylan Brooks and
Thomas Woolson second and fourth, respectively. Cone narrowly nipped McLaughlin on the second attempt, but it was not enough to catch him for the crown. The second run was kind to Brooks and Woolson as well with the former claiming the last spot on the podium in third in 2:02.11 and the latter fourth in 2:02.33 as the Big Green amassed 135 points, well ahead of the hosts with 108.
For the women, Dartmouth junior
Kelly Moore and freshman
Stephanie Currie shared a podium step by tying for third place finish in 2:07.06. Moore had a scintillating second run (1:05.19, tied for the fastest) to vault from eighth place after the first trip down the slopes, while Currie jumped up from sixth on her second attempt. Caroline Bartlett of Middlebury won the event in 2:06.30 and Paula Moltzan of Vermont took second, but the Big Green won the event, 13 points ahead of Vermont, 123-110, as junior
Foreste Peterson placed seventh in 2:08.17 to leave Dartmouth as the only team with three in the top 10.
The cross country teams engaged in a classcial sprint relay with two skiers making up each relay group, alternating on six 1.5K laps at the Rikert Nordic Center. The Big Green claimed the top two spots in the women's races, with its freshman duo of
Lauren Jortberg and
Abby Drach leading almost throughout. Jortberg was in second after the first lap, but Drach pulled ahead on the second lap and they remained there until they won in 23:23.1, more than 27 seconds aheads of the Dartmouth sophomore pair of
Taryn Hunt-Smith and
Emily Hyde. That twosome started in ninth after one lap, but gradually passed all but their teammates, edging a New Hampshire duo by one second. The team score consisted of each school's top two teams, giving the Green 141 points.
The top men's pair also came from Dartmouth with sophomore
Gavin McEwen and junior
Luke Brown taking the gold. But their road to victory wasn't as clear cut as the women's as they battled back and forth with Eli Hoenig and Braden Becker of Williams. After the first lap, the two teams were never separated by more than three seconds at the end of a lap. But in the end, Brown was able to just stay ahead of Becker, winning the race by 0.6 seconds in 20:52.8. Senior
Fabian Stocek and junior
Callan DeLine were all alone in fourth in 21:15.7, giving Dartmouth the team victory with 130 points with Williams (114) in second and Vermont (113) in third.
The EISA Championship will be hosted by Bates College in Maine starting on Friday at Sunday River and Black Mountain.
