Big Green Defeat Gophers on Day One of Courtside Classic, 4-3

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Senior Jacqueline Crawford's three-sit tiebreak victory helped the Dartmouth women's tennis team defeat host Minnesota, 4-3, on the first day of the Courtside Classic at the Baseline Tennis Center. This is the second match in a row that has been clinched by the co-captain. The Big Green are 4-0 on the season, while the Gophers dipped to 2-2.

Minnesota took the doubles point by winning at the No. 2 and 3 spots. Senior Taylor Ng and junior Kristina Mathis had a 7-5 defeat of Mehvish Safdar and Caitlyn Merzbacher at No. 1, but the home team went into singles with a one-point lead.

Mathis' 6-4, 6-3 victory at the No. 3 position tied the score at one-all, but a Gopher win at No. 1 put Minnesota up by one. Freshman Racquel Lyn – who is No. 104 in the ITA rankings – defeated Safdar, 7-5, 6-4, at the No. 5 spot to make it a 2-2 match, but the home team won at No. 6 to pull ahead. Junior Julia Schroeder tied the score one last time at the No. 4 position, taking down Annemarie Emma, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, to have it all come down to the match at No. 2.

Playing against Tina Kreinis, Crawford dropped the first set, 6-3, before winning the second by the same score. It came down to the tiebreaker to decide which individual would win the match and, in turn, which team would be victorious, and it was the Big Green senior that walked away with the win.

The Big Green will play its second match of the Courtside Classic at 11 a.m. on Sunday against Washington State, which defeated DePaul, 4-3, on Saturday.
