LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Dartmouth softball team dropped a pair of games to LMU in Los Angeles on Tuesday evening.
The Big Green are now 0-14-1, while the Lions improve to 12-16.
In game one of the double header, Breanna Ethridge took the circle for Dartmouth, where the Loganville, Georgia native hurled 4.2 innings with three strikeouts.
After a scoreless first, the Lions struck in the bottom of the second inning when Aria Pogni homered to center field for the early 1-0 lead. Another scoreless inning gave way to the fourth when LMU broke the game open, scoring six runs off of six hits.
A lead off walk and pair of singles loaded the bases for the Lions, setting up Mackenzie Kutzke for an RBI single to left to field. The next batter, Sabrina Tebou also singled to left for the second run of the inning. LMU plated another run due to interference, leaving a pair of base runners on for Irma Sanchez who smacked a double to left-center, collecting two RBIs. The Lions got their last run of the inning across when Amanda Dirks singled to left-center for the RBI base hit.
Trailing 7-0 in the top of the fifth, Dartmouth needed to plate some runs with the Lions hitting the ball well. Chloe Madill hit a one-out single, but that was all the offense the Big Green could produce. In the bottom of the fifth, LMU's Caitlin Harman hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded to score the Lion's eighth run of the afternoon which ended the ball game via the run rule.
In game two, Morgan Ebow got the start in the circle for Dartmouth. Once again it was LMU who got on the scoreboard first. After the Big Green were retired in order, Sanchez led off with a walk and advanced to third off of Sanchez's double down the right field line. This set up Dirks for a two-RBI single up the middle, giving the Lions an early 2-0 lead.
Dartmouth had a chance to respond in the top of the second when it loaded the bases after a pair of base hits and a walk, but could not get anything across.
LMU added to its lead in the bottom of the second by scoring four more runs. Sanchez and Driks each hit RBI singles, as Finie hit a two-RBI single to right-center to put the Lions ahead 6-0 after two innings of play. The Big Green got one of these runs back in the top of the third when Maddie Damore hit a one out single to the shortstop which scored Jade Bravo from third.
In the bottom half of the inning, Tessa Grossman came into pitch for Ebow as the Lions responded with four more runs. Taylor Lockwood reached on an error with two runners in scoring position, which plated the pair. Lockwood then stole home after a walk by Harman and Finie reached on a fielder's choice, giving LMU the commanding 10-1 lead.
The Lions bats exploded in the bottom of the fourth for nine runs off of six hits. This rally was highlighted by back-to-back doubles that scored a combined three runs as well as a two-run homer by Brooke Christensen to left field.
Trailing 19-1, Dartmouth added one run in the top of the fifth when Claire Bird scored on a wild pitch, but the contest would end at the end of the inning due to the run rule.
The Big Green return to action this weekend when Dartmouth takes on BYU in California on Friday.
