LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Dartmouth softball team dropped two games to previously ranked BYU in the opening day of the UCLA Tournament in Los Angeles, California on Friday evening.
The Big Green are now 0-16-1, while the Cougars improve to 21-7.
In game one, Dartmouth sent freshman Morgan Ebow to the circle for her sixth start in a Green and White uniform. She pitched four innings allowing just one earned run and three hits.
The Big Green threatened to score in the top of the first by putting two runners in scoring position with just one out, but consecutive strikeouts ended the scoring threat for Dartmouth. BYU eventually broke the scoreless draw in the bottom of the second when Alexa Strid homered to left field. Later in the inning, Briielle Breland was hit by a pitch and scored on an error when McKenzie St. Clair recorded a hard hit single to center field. Ebow was able to get Rylee Jensen to fly out to right center to end the inning.
A quick scoreless third inning gave way to the fourth when the Cougars tacked on another run. Consecutive fielding errors loaded the bases before Breland reached on a fielder's choice, platting Stirid for the 3-0 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, BYU added one more insurance run with some swift base running. Caitlyn Larsen Alldredge laid down a bunt single and advanced to second on a fielder's choice. The Cougars then pulled off a double steal which saw St. Clair advance to second and Alldredge cross home plate safely.
The Big Green had once more chance to get on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh, but could not put the ball into play.
In game two, Breanna Ethridge got the start in the circle for Dartmouth, where she pitched a complete seven innings with six strikeouts and just one walk.
In the first, BYU's Ashley Thompson doubled to left center which advanced Lexi Tarrow to third. Ethridge was able to get out of the inning by striking out Aris Paulson before Strid fouled out to third. The Big Green were able to strike first in the bottom of the third when Alyssa Jorgensen singled down the left field line and scored off of Morgan Martinelli's double to left-center.
A scoreless fourth and fifth gave way to the sixth when the Cougars got on the scoreboard. With one out, Strid smacked a triple to right field which platted a pair to give BYU a 2-1 lead. In Dartmouth's bottom half of the inning, Maddie Damore singled to center field with two outs, but the Big Green could not spark a rally.
In the top of the seventh, the Cougars added to their lead with a swing of the bat when Thompson hit a three-run home run to right field, putting BYU ahead 5-1. The Big Green were given one last chance in the bottom of the seventh, but could not score leaving one runner on base.
Dartmouth returns to action tomorrow for games against Pacific at 2:30 p.m. and UC Riverside at 5 p.m.
