TEMPE, Ariz. – Dartmouth men's tennis freshman Charlie Broom was named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Region Rookie of the Year on Monday. This is the first time that a Big Green player has received the award.
Broom had a great rookie campaign, ascending through Dartmouth's lineup throughout the spring – beginning at the No. 4 position and vaulting up to No. 1 for the final five matches. He competed in the No. 1 and 2 positions during Ivy League play, compiling a 3-1 mark, with his other three matches going unfinished. Overall, he went 23-6 in singles play this season.
In doubles, Broom finished out the year with a record of 18-7. Like he did in singles play, he started off on a lower court before making his way up to the No. 1 position. He kicked off the 2017 portion of the season by going 3-1 at No. 3 with Ciro Riccardi before he started to play alongside Max Fliegner. The pair finished out the season with a record of 9-2, claiming a 6-1 win over Columbia's No. 36-ranked tandem of Richard and Victor Pham on April 16.
A week after the season wrapped up, Broom was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Year, also earning a spot on the All-Ivy First Team.
The national award winners will be released on Tuesday, May 23.
