HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth field hockey team fell to non-conference Maine, 5-3, Sunday afternoon at Chase AstroTurf Field.

The Big Green dropped to 2-4 overall with the defeat, while the victory improved the Black Bears' record to 5-2.

“We came to play,” head coach Amy Fowler said. “We gave Maine a game, and a credit to them: they can finish. We're not satisfied with the result; we need to create more scoring chances and finish them.

“Overall though, our team defense and pressing was solid,” Fowler added.

Sophomores Katie Spanos and Carmen Braceras scored goals for the home team. Spanos actually scored a pair in the game, pulling her team to within one late, only to see Maine answer back at each of the Green and White's second-half goals.

Spanos got Dartmouth on the board first just 1:55 into the game. Goals from the Black Bears' Samantha Wagg and Brianna Ricker in the fifth and 16th minutes, respectively, however, sent the game to intermission with the visiting team up one.

Brittany Smith scored in the 43rd minute to build the lead to two. Braceras' second of the year came in the 59th minute and made it a 3-2 game, but was met by a Madison Cummings marker three minutes later.

Down a pair of goals once again, Spanos found the back of the cage in the 65th minute. However, like it had done all game, Maine answered back with Emily Hindle's tally 70 seconds later to cap the scoring in favor of the team from Orono, 5-3.

Junior goalkeeper Hailey Valerio made eight saves in the contest and got help from team captain Morgan Philie and her defensive save. Emma Cochran made one save, while allowing three in the winning effort at the other end of the field.

Maine finished the afternoon with a 20-6 edge in shots and a 10-2 advantage in corners.

Dartmouth is back in action and opens Ivy League play next Saturday (Sept. 23) at home against Princeton at noon.
