THIS WEEKEND
The Dartmouth men's hockey team heads out on the road for the first time in a month this weekend as it travels to the North Country to take on St. Lawrence and No. 2 Clarkson.
LAST TIME OUT
The Big Green are coming off a second straight 1-1 home weekend, taking on conference opponents Quinnipiac and Princeton.
• Dartmouth started the weekend with a thrilling last-minute win against the Bobcats thanks to a Will Graber goal with just 9.9 seconds left in regulation, lifting the home team to a 4-3 victory.
• In front of a packed house, the Green and White were unable to hold off the skilled attack of Princeton the following night, falling, 6-3.
SCOUTING THE SAINTS
• St. Lawrence will play host to Dartmouth on Friday night with a 4-16-2 overall record and an 0-9-1 mark in conference games.
• The lone league point came via a 4-4 tie with RPI on Nov. 4. Since then, the Saints have gone 0-8-0 against ECAC Hockey competition.
• Nolan Gluchowski is the team's active leader in points with12 thanks to his dozen assists.
• Joe Sullivan leads the team with eight goals.
• Arthur Brey (1-14-1 | 4.05 | .885%) has been the goalie of record for most of the season with Daniel Mannella (3-2-1 | 2.45 | .929%) backing him up and playing a bit more than a third of the time in net.
AGAINST ST. LAWRENCE
• The Big Green will look for their first win vs. the Saints in a little more than two years as St. Lawrence has won the last three match-ups.
• Dartmouth's last win against St. Lawrence was a 4-2 triumph and came on Jan. 16, 2016 in Hanover. That's the lone win against SLU by this year's senior class in their three years.
• In last season's final meeting between the two, Corey Kalk went for the first and only hat trick of his career, but the visiting Saints managed to leave Thompson with a 5-4 win after scoring the last two goals of the game in the final 10 minutes of regulation.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS
• So Clarkson is pretty good.
• The Golden Knights are currently No. 2 in both national polls and deservedly so with an 18-3-1 overall record and a 14-game win streak coming into the weekend.
• At 10-0-0 in league games, Clarkson and No. 1 Notre Dame (Big Ten) are the only two teams in the nation without a loss or tie in conference games this season.
• Sophomore Sheldon Rempal leads the team with 28 points (16-12-28), a figure that ranks first in ECAC Hockey and 12th nationally. His 16 goals are second only to Harvard's Ryan Donato (17).
• Fellow sophomore Devin Brosseau is also on a torrid pace this season, ranking fifth in the league in scoring (5-19-24), with his 19 assists ranking as the second-best figure in the conference.
• The league's top goalie (statistically speaking) also resides in Potsdam as sophomore Jake Kielly leads the conference in wins (17), save percentage (.950) and goals against average (1.33). The wins and GAA also rank as the best in the nation, while his save percentage trails only Notre Dame's Cale Morris (.956).
AGAINST CLARKSON
• Just as it has done against the Saints, Dartmouth has not beaten the Golden Knights in more than two years (Jan. 15, 2016 | 5-2).
• Clarkson has won each of the last three meetings since, scoring at least four times in each game.
• Clarkson took the game in Potsdam last season, 4-2. Daniel Warpecha and Corey Kalk scored the Big Green's goals.
AGAINST THE No. 2 TEAM
• This will be the second time this season that Dartmouth has played a team ranked No. 2 in that week's national polls after playing Denver on Dec. 15-16 when the Pioneers were jumped in the rankings by St. Cloud State.
• The Big Green went 1-1 in the Mile High City against the second-ranked Pioneers, falling on the first night, 1-0, before winning the second game in comeback fashion, 5-4.
TENNIS BALLS NOT HOCKEY PUCKS
• For the fifth straight year, it was a rookie who scored the goal that set off the barrage of tennis balls onto the ice as freshman Matt Baker notched the opening tally against Princeton at 8:03 of the first period.
• Baker now joins Cam Strong (2016-17), Alex Jasiek (2015-16), Carl Hesler (2014-15) and Grant Opperman (2013-14) as the rookies to score the last five tennis ball goals.
• The last time a player other than a freshman scored the celebrated marker was when senior defenseman and team captain Mike Keenan opened the scoring at 15:08 of the first period on March 1, 2013.
No. 1 PLAY OF THE WEEK
• Last week's OT winner from Kevan Kilistoff was named the No. 2 NCAA Men's Hockey Play of the Week.
• Baker one-upped his captain and earned the top play of the week for his first-period goal that set off a sea of tennis balls.
3 IN 100TH
• Corey Kalk became the 99th player in program history to suit up for his 100th career game, doing so last Friday versus Quinnipiac.
• Kalk then put together his best game of the season, scoring the first Dartmouth goal and then assisting on two more, including the late-game winner.
• His three points were a season high and matched the best single-game output of any Dartmouth player this season.
100TH TO 100
• Set to join Kalk in the century club as the 100th member is senior defenseman Tim Shoup.
• The Pennsylvania native will play in game No. 99 Friday in Canton and is scheduled to make his 100th appearance in a Dartmouth sweater Saturday in Potsdam against the Golden Knights.
LATE WINNER
• Will Graber scored the game-winning goal against Quinnipiac with just 9.9 seconds remaining in regulation to secure Dartmouth's first win against the Bobcats since the end of the 2014-15 season.
• It was the third time this season that the Green and White have scored in the final minute of the third period and the second time that tally proved to the game winner: Shane Sellar's empty netter at Denver, 19:03.
• The latest goal scored in any game this season was Baker's first career marker that came at Colgate on Nov. 11 at 19:53.6 of the third period in a 3-2 loss.
REALLY?
• Graber ranks second on the team in scoring, but didn't manage a multi-point game until Saturday against Princeton.
• Prior to the contest with the Tigers, the Colorado native had registered points in nine games over the course of the season, but no more than one in any game.
VOTE FOR HOBEY
• Senior Devin Buffalo is Dartmouth's nominee for the 2018 Hobey Baker Award, presented annually to the top player in college hockey.
• Fan voting for the award is currently open and can be found at www.hobeybaker.com/vote.
ROAD WIN(S)
• Dartmouth is unbeaten on the road in 2018.
• The Big Green managed just one road win in the first half of the season, a 5-4 victory against Denver in the final game before the break.
• Dartmouth is just 1-6-1 in games away from Hanover.
THE TIMBER LINE
• The line of Shane Sellar, Will Graber and Quin Foreman have come on to be the top-scoring line for the Big Green this season.
• Another strong weekend of play gives the trio — who all stand at 6-foot-3 or taller, hence the name “Timber Line” — a scoring line of 11-13-24 in just eight games played, the most by any Dartmouth line this season.
• The three are averaging three points per game together.
THE SIZE LINE
• The line of Kalk, Baker and Collin Rutherford — who are all under six feet tall — also put together a solid weekend and have moved into second amongst Big Green lines this season in terms of point production.
• In just seven games played together, the trio has amassed a scoring line of 7-12-19.
• The second-best line is averaging 2.71 points per game when playing together.
THE HOMESTAND IS OVER!
• The longest homestand of the season wrapped up after three straight weekends.
• Dartmouth finished 3-2-1 in those six games with at least one win each weekend.
• The Big Green took down No. 16 UNH, RPI in OT and Quinnipiac, while also playing to a 2-2 tie with No. 18 Minnesota Duluth.
FOLLOW ALONG
• All Dartmouth home games this season will be carried live and in HD on the Ivy League Network. Road games played at Brown, Cornell, Harvard, Princeton and Yale will also be streamed on the network for subscribers.
