Among the inductees were Olympians, a World Series winner and former coaches
HANOVER, N.H. — Dartmouth College and the Department of Athletics and Recreation inducted 29 new members into the Wearers of the Green in a ceremony on the evening of Oct. 28 after the homecoming football game against Harvard. More than 200 people gathered at the Top of the Hop — the largest crowd since the ceremony was moved to Hanover in 2014 — to honor the new members, including Dartmouth President Phil Hanlon '77 and Director of Athletics and Recreation Harry Sheehy '55a.
This class of varsity athletes featured two dozen graduates almost exclusively from the Classes of 2012 and 2013. Some of the inductees earned their place among the Wearers from their accomplishments while competing for the Big Green in 14 sports represented this year, including 15 All-Americans, five three-time first-team All-Ivy performers and four Ivy League Players of the Year — Kelly Hood '12 (field hockey), Lucky Mkosana '12 (men's soccer), Sarah Plumb '12 (women's lacrosse) and Nick Schwieger '12 (football).
Then there were other inductees that qualified for the prestigious honor after their playing days at Dartmouth or outside of the collegiate experience altogether, some of which are among the four Olympians being honored — Tommy Ford '12 (skiing in 2010 and '18), Josh Konieczny '13 (rowing in 2016), Alexi Pappas '13 (track in 2016) and Ida Sargent '11 (skiing in 2014 and '18). There is also Kyle Hendricks '12, who helped the Chicago Cubs win their first World Series in 108 years when he led Major League Baseball in ERA and finished third in the Cy Young voting in 2016.
Both of the coaching inductees — Christine Booker (women's alpine) and Ruff Patterson (men's Nordic) — were head coaches for the 2007 ski team that won the NCAA championship. Three honorary Wearers — Stacia Branca Smith '64, Fritz Corrigan '64 and Chris Jenny '77 — were included in the class for making exceptionally generous contributions of time and/or financial resources that have made a significant impact on the college's athletic programs.
"We have tremendous athletes here at Dartmouth," Sheehy said. "I am absolutely thrilled to have the opportunity to honor each one of these alumni for their excellence on the field of competition, whether it be during their college days or beyond. We take great pride in including them in the ranks of the Wearers of the Green!"
Wearers of the Green, essentially the Dartmouth Athletics Hall of Fame, was created in 1984 to honor students, alumni and coaches who have met specific criteria for athletic excellence in their respective sports. Previously, a ceremony was held in Boston every five years to induct new members. But since 2014, new members have been inducted on an annual basis during Homecoming weekend in Hanover, alternating years to induct varsity athletes, or club-sport athletes and masters champions.
In addition to the induction ceremony, the new inductees marched in the Dartmouth Night Parade on Friday evening and were recognized on Memorial Field during halftime of the football game against Harvard on Saturday afternoon.
