HILTON HEAD, S.C. — Dartmouth freshman Jason Liu fired five birdies in the second round of the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate to finish with a two-under 70 for the round and an overall 2-over 146 on the day to tie for 21st in the 89-player field. The Big Green finished the day 16th with a 608 (+32), while Georgia paced the field with a 567 (-9), a mere one stroke ahead of 38th-ranked TCU.
Liu played a decent first round by carding a 76 (+4) that included three birdies, but he returned found a bit more consistency in round two by sinking five more birdies along with 10 pars.
Classmate James Turner also recorded three birdies in the first round and led Dartmouth with a two-over 74. In the second round, he was able to shave a stroke with four more birdies and sits just one stroke behind Liu in a tie for 26th.
Only three players made par more often than senior Ian Kelsey, including 15 during the first round. But the other three holes left him with a seven-over 79, then added a birdie to his tally during his second round, dropping three strokes in the process, to complete the day with a 155 (+11) in a tie for 67th. Sophomore Riley Griffin rounded out the Dartmouth scorers with a 160 (+20) and four birdies to his credit.
No less than 16 golfers finished the day under par on the two courses — Palmer and Wexford, both par 72 and 6,913 yards. Akron's Elliot Grayson and Georgia's Spencer Ralston had the low round of the day, carding a six-under 66 in the second tour, as both recorded seven birdies. But Grayson was better during the first round with a two-under 70 to take a three-stroke lead ahead of four golfers, including Ralston, heading into the final round.
The third round will feature a shotgun start on the Palmer course beginning at 8:15 a.m.
