AMHERST, Mass. – It took until the 107th minute for a goal to be scored at Rudd Field Saturday afternoon. It was senior
Justin Donawa who found the back of the net off an assist from sophomore
Kota Sakurai to give the Big Green their first win of the season, 1-0, at UMass.
Dartmouth (1-4-2) was in control for much of the match, as they outshot UMass (4-3-2) 15-5 and 6-3 on goal. The Big Green also came away with 10 corner kicks compared to two for the Minutemen. Donawa and fellow senior
Jonny Nierenberg each finished with five shots with two on goal, while junior
Zach Kalk and Sakurai also had a shot on goal.
Junior goalkeeper
Henry Stusnick came away with three saves and his 6'7 frame was a factor as he shut down multiple chances for the Minutemen.
Dartmouth dominated the first half, the Big Green offense let loose the first nine shots of the game and held a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks. The first UMass shot was a header with just 24 seconds left in the half that was saved by Stusnick.
With the match still scoreless, play was evenly matched in the second half as Dartmouth had three shots, while UMass had two. Things got chippy in the 73rd and 75th minutes when each side picked up yellow cards. Sakurai's shot in the 90th minute was saved to keep it scoreless and send the game into overtime.
The Big Green thought they had it won just seconds into the first overtime. A shot that went in goal was disallowed due to an offsides call. A shot by Nierenberg that was saved in the 100th minute sent it to double overtime.
A heads up pass by Sakurai set up Donawa for a breakaway in the 107th minute and the senior made the most of his chance by launching it past the keeper, securing the first win of the year for the Big Green.
Dartmouth is back in action at home when they take on Albany on Tuesday at 7 p.m. on Burnham Field.
