HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth field hockey team fell in overtime, 3-2, to Vermont Friday afternoon in the 2018 home opener at Chase Field.
The heartbreaking loss came after the Catamounts' (1-3) Landon Warren scored the tying goal with 2:03 remaining in regulation before Clodagh Ferry potted the winner 3:31 into the extra period.
The Big Green carried a 1-0 lead into halftime on the strength of
Katie Persin's second score of the season. The junior redirected a
Jessica Valvano shot on a corner play in the seventh minute to put the home team up one.
The game remained a one-goal advantage for the home team until the 39th minute when Warren scored the first of her two goals on the afternoon. However, it remained tied only briefly as junior
Katie Spanos notched her second of the afternoon three minutes later to put the home team back up by one again. Spanos carried the ball half the length of the field before flipping a shot over the outstretched reach of the Vermont goalkeeper Sierra Espeland.
The Catamounts clawed their way back with the equalizer after pulling their goalkeeper with just over four minutes remaining to play with the extra forward. It paid off as Warren tipped home a long shot to force overtime.
Prior to Ferry's game winner, Valvano looked to save the game for the Big Green as she made a diving defensive save in front of the net on what looked to be a sure-goal for the visitors. That jubilation was quickly thwarted, though, as Vermont scored the winner on the ensuing restart to earn its second victory in as many seasons against the Green and White.
It was tough-luck loss for senior goalkeeper
Hailey Valerio as she played well all afternoon, making eight saves in the game with the Catamounts dictating play nearly the entire time. Espeland stopped four in the win at the other end of the field.
Dartmouth is back in action Sunday at UMass. Game time in Amherst is set for 3 p.m.
