HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth field hockey team dropped a non-conference game to visiting Maine, 2-1, Sunday at Chase Field.
Senior
Katie Spanos scored the Big Green (3-10) goal, while Brianna Ricker and Chloe Walton each tallied for the Black Bears (6-9).
Â
"This team is a resilient bunch," head coach
Amy Fowler said. "We were a different team today; one that played very connected. Defensively, we were stingier, we had a higher level of composure and gave Maine a run for sure.
"We had a 50 percent conversion rate on shots on goals to goals...2 to 1," Fowler added. "Bottom line, we must get more shots on goal, to force our opponent to play the ball more. It was a solid effort and we'll build on this as we head into our Columbia game next weekend!"
Â
Walton opened the scoring in the sixth minute on a loose ball in the circle, knocking it into the net through traffic. Spanos answered back early in the second quarter and the 17th minute, tipping in a shot from
Katie Persin in the high circle after a great centering feed from
Maddie Donahue on the far side of the offensive end started the play.
Â
The goal proved to be a big one for the senior and team captain as it gives her 71 career points, moving her alone into seventh all-time at Dartmouth. Spanos jumped over Lisa Masini '13 and her 70 career points and now sits just four points back of Virginia Peisch '12 for sixth in program history.
Â
No one would find the backboard of the cage again until Brianna Ricker redirected a Cassandra Mascarenhas shot on a penalty corner play high into the top of the netting for what proved to be the game-winning score.
Â
In net, sophomore
Isabella Santucci made five saves for the home team, while Mia Borley scored one for the Black Bears.
Â
Dartmouth is home next Saturday, playing host to Columbia on Saturday morning with an 11:30 a.m. start time at Chase Field.
EDIT: The lone Dartmouth goal was originally credited to Persin before changed on a closer inspection of video replays.
