HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth field hockey team dropped a 4-3 overtime game to Columbia Saturday at Chase Field.
Â
Trailing by two with under five minutes to play, the Lions (7-7, 3-2 Ivy) stormed back to tie the game thanks to a pair of goals from Ellie Decker with the tying marker coming with just two seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.
Â
Decker would go on to score the OT winner and cap her hat trick 59 seconds into the extra frame, handing the Big Green (3-11, 0-5 Ivy) their most heartbreaking defeat of the season.
Â
"I'm at a loss for words. Our kids played a really good game and put themselves in the mix with a very good Columbia team," head coach
Amy Fowler said. "Sometimes you need to create your own luck and find a way to rise above. Today we fell short by literally a couple seconds, and I know our kids feel like their hearts were ripped from their chests after a loss like that.
Â
"We will pick up the pieces and will go right back to work on Monday as we prep for another big weekend on the road," Fowler added.
Â
After Columbia's Jennifer Trieschman scored the lone goal of the first half for either side, the home team began to take control early in the third quarter. Senior captain
Katie Spanos scored her seventh of the season just under four minutes into the half on a corner play.
Â
Holley Cromwell would redirect a Spanos shot on another corner play near the end of the third quarter to take a 2-1 lead. The difference would be pushed to two as rookie
Myah Pease came into the game and scored her first career goal on a penalty stroke six and a half minutes into the fourth quarter.
Â
The Lions would pull goalkeeper Alexa Conomikes in the final minutes to gain the extra attacker in the hopes of a late-game push that would end up with the tying score. In net, she would finish with six saves and aided by a defensive stop by one of her teammates, while Dartmouth's
Isabella Santucci would stop seven, including the initial shot in the final Columbia rush with just seconds left in regulation.
Â
The Big Green are on the road next weekend at Harvard and Vermont on Saturday and Sunday.
