HANOVER, N.H. – It was announced last week that former Dartmouth equestrian head coach Sally Batton has been named a member of the first class of Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Hall of Fame inductees.
Â
Batton coached at Dartmouth for 29 years and oversaw the program's leap to a varsity program in her time. A veteran coach of 35 years between her stint in Hanover and Centenary University where she started her coaching career, Batton was a staple of the collegiate equestrian landscape.
Â
During her time at the helm of the Big Green, Batton's teams were successful on many levels, but it was in 2013 when she was recognized for her role in those triumphs as she was awarded the IHSA Lifetime Achievement Award.
Â
Leading her teams to five Ivy Show Championships (1997, 2007, 2010, 2014, 2016), Batton was also a leader for so many riders across the country, serving on the IHSA Board of Directions from 1984 through 2017, including as a regional president and then as the chair on several national committees. She also served as IHSA National Steward from 2001-2017.
Â
In 2008, Batton was named the American Riding Instructors Association (ARIA) Instructor of the Year and is an ARIA certified Level III hunter seat trainer and a United States Hunter Jumper Association certified trainer.
Â
In total, seven individuals will be honored for their work in collegiate equestrian. An induction ceremony will be held during the IHSA board meeting on Saturday, Jan. 4, in Orlando, Florida.
